Job Summary Under minimum supervision, perform a variety of tasks assisting journeyman mechanics or lead persons in maintaining and repairing a variety of facilities plumbing and HVAC machinery and equipment. Will also participate in work involving rehabilitation and alterations to rooms, laboratories and offices with a career path directed toward Plumbing Mechanic. Essential Job Duties Responsible for following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment. Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance on plumbing systems and components such as emergency showers and eyewash stations. Assist in the installation of plumbing fixtures and equipment. Provide written and oral reports effectively. Perform other duties as assigned. Basic Qualifications Education and Experience: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent with at least 2 years of experience in maintenance or construction. Must possess general knowledge of carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, and air conditioning crafts. Ability to communicate professionally with the members of the Caltech community in all situations, and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments. Ability to work various shifts as well as overtime and weekends. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive Institute vehicles. Must be eligible and be able to adhere to the Institute’s Motor Vehicle policy. Must be able to communicate effectively with strong oral and written communication skills. Must be able to follow written instructions. Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 pounds daily, bend, climb stairs, squeeze with arms and hands, properly operate machinery, and work outdoors in various weather conditions. Ability to distinguish between various colorful cords and wires. Preferred Qualifications 1 year or more of work experience in a university setting is a plus. Proficiency with Asset Works and Kronos or similar preventive maintenance and timekeeping software would be a plus. Strong teamwork, project management and problem resolution skills. Software proficiency in MS Word, Excel, MS Project, E-Builder and Outlook.
