Special Instructions to Applicants This posting is for applicants who have completed a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Police Academy, are currently or formerly employed as a deputy/police officer. If you have not attended a police academy please apply to the Police Trainee job. The written and physical tests will be waived for police officer applicants who do not need to attend California POST Basic Police Academy. If you are currently an out of state deputy/police officer, you must obtain a California POST Basic Course Waiver before your hire date. All eligible applicants will be contacted for an oral interview via email. You must provide proof of your status as a lateral or pre-service deputy/police officer prior to receiving an oral interview invitation. If your status as a police officer needs to be reinstated via California POST recertification course, that course must be completed prior to your hire date. Department Summary The UCLA Police Department is a leader in providing progressive law enforcement services to a culturally diverse urban campus and its surrounding community. We do this through patrol, rapid response to calls for service, investigations, education and implementation of preventative strategies. Our work, grounded in a community policing philosophy, utilizes campus partnerships as the most effective approach for insuring a safe campus. Position Summary Under the direction of a Police Sergeant, expected to perform regular law enforcement duties including: foot, bicycle and/or vehicle patrol of University of California properties (campus, medical centers, Westwood properties and nearby residential areas), investigate and prepare preliminary investigation reports, issue citations, make arrests, assist in the prosecution of violators of law, provide crime prevention information and serve as a proactive resource to a uniquely diverse community. May also work as part of a security detail with civilian and other law enforcement agencies at university and athletic events. Have the opportunity to participate in a number of assignments such as bicycle patrol, various training instructor positions, detectives, background investigations, crime prevention, field training officer, traffic collision investigator and various lead officer positions. Also perform other duties as assigned. Salary & Compensation *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications Knowledge of State, Federal and University of California laws, rules and regulations as applicable to the police function. (Required) Thorough knowledge in the following areas: First Aid/CPR, campus streets, buildings, and parking lots, general law enforcement procedures, vehicle laws, use of firearms. (Required) Able to observe situations analytically, impartially, and objectively, and to record pertinent information accurately and completely. (Required) Carries a firearm. (Required) Must be a US citizen or have permanent resident alien status and achieve citizenship within three years. (Required) Must have no felony convictions. (Required) Excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to interact with a diverse community. (Required) Excellent ability to use computer devices and programs and other modern law enforcement technologies and tools. (Required) Thorough understanding of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends applied within the University environment. (Required) Meet all other requirements for peace officers as established by law and the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, including possession of or ability to obtain a POST Basic Certificate. (Required) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations High School Diploma (Required) Valid driver’s license. (Required) Special Conditions for Employment Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation. Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment. Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired. Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination. TB Test: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory TB test. Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV “Pull Notice System” and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record. CANRA: The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA . The employee must sign the “Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse”.
