Department Summary Infrastructure Services provides flexible, reliable, and secure traditional and cloud infrastructure services (network services, platform services, data center operations and management, and unified communications) enabling connectivity, productivity, and security for UCLA. Infrastructure services strives to optimize performance increasing storage, elevating the network, and reducing downtown.Platform Services enables hybrid cloud for computing, storage, and services environments with a mix of on-premises infrastructure, private cloud services, and public cloud. This team creates seamless orchestration across various platforms to stimulate agility, scalability, reliability, and lower infrastructure costs. This allows for applications and components to interoperate across boundaries improving developer productivity as well as regulatory compliance and security. Platform Services oversees provisioning, hosting, and administration of physical and virtual servers and related storage. They maintain and provision core storage capabilities such as server storage and database backups. Position Summary The Manager, Platform Services will oversee the efficient operation and maintenance of the university’s platform systems, including z/OS, Linux, and Windows. Their team will ensure optimal performance, conduct routine maintenance, and promptly address any system issues that may arise. Collaborating closely with other IT leaders, the Manager will contribute to the strategic plans for server and storage upgrades, migrations, and integrations. The Manager, Platform Services will align the university’s platform infrastructure with campus-wide technological objectives, ensuring it supports the institution’s academic and administrative needs effectively, including a transition away from on-premises toward cloud. As a point of contact for platform-related inquiries and initiatives, they will work collaboratively with other IT departments, faculty, and administrators. This role will involve fostering cohesive and effective platform solutions across the university, promoting seamless integration and usability. Additionally, they will be responsible for maintaining robust security protocols for mainframe and other platform operations. This includes safeguarding data integrity, ensuring privacy, and adhering to relevant regulations and university policies to uphold the highest standards of security and compliance. The Manager, Platform Services will positively impact UCLA’s operations and culture by optimizing platform performance in service of the university’s academic mission. This team member will advance the University’s mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications Five years experience working in one or more of the following fields: mainframe services, cloud technology, platform services, information technology, IT service management, or a related field. (Required) Two years experience leading teams in a management or leadership role, particularly in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment, or a related field. (Required) Expertise in strategies and tools for data backup, recovery, and continuity of platform operations. (Required) Demonstrated experience presenting complex technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders. (Required) Advanced project management skills with demonstrated experience delegating responsibility, tracking project progress, supervising others, and advising teams on competing priorities. (Required) Extensive experience solving technical and non-technical problems; able to delegate solutioning (Required) Experience as a point of escalation. (Required) Demonstrated experience providing inclusive leadership of others, cultivating an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. (Required) Has demonstrated experience leading in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment. (Required) Seven or more years experience working in one or more of the following fields: mainframe services, cloud technology, platform services, information technology, IT service management. (Preferred) Five years experience leading teams in a management or leadership role, particularly in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. (Preferred) Experience in complex higher education environments,serving academic and administrative functions of a largepublic university. (Preferred) Deep understanding of various operating systems, including mainframe technologies and public cloud technologies (z/OS, COBOL, CICS, DB2, IMS, and JCL, Linux, Windows, AWS, Azure and GCP). (Required) Ability to troubleshoot complex cross-platform issues effectively and coach team of systems administrators to do the same. (Required) Knowledge of platform security practices and protocols to safeguard data and systems. (Required) Significant understanding of the tools and techniques to monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues. (Required) Advanced written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate work assignments to medium-sized teams. (Required) Demonstrated leadership / management skills, including abilities in persuasion, negotiation, change management, and mentorship. (Required) Able to lead data gathering efforts seeking information from diverse sources (Required) Understanding of how decisions affect teams. Ability to make decisions with integrity. (Required) Inspires creativity in others and advises teams on industry-leading practices, such as the incorporation of new technologies or processes. (Required) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations Bachelor’s Degree in one or more of the following fields: information technology, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent experience/training. (Required) Special Conditions for Employment This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that includes regular visits to campus as needed (for those who work remotely, travel/lodging expenses are not eligible for reimbursement). The anticipated pay range for this position is $137,458.20 -$155,336.50, annually; salary is dependent upon the skills and experience of the selected finalist.
