Job Summary The Athenaeum is a private membership club on the beautiful campus of Caltech in Pasadena, California. Caltech, founded in 1891, is a world-renowned center of scientific study that ranks among the best universities in the world. The club was founded in 1930 as a gathering place for Nobel Laureates, faculty, and scholars to stimulate friendship and the exchange of ideas about science, art, and literature. Today, 90 years later, The Athenaeum continues to serve faculty, staff, students, and select community members as they gather to dine, celebrate, and entertain. The Athenaeum serves approximately 3,900 members, offering dining, private and special events, and lodging. The club is recognized as a ‘Platinum Club of America’ confirming its place among the top 50 private clubs in the country. Under minimal supervision, the Dining Room Services Captain will be responsible for the dining room service area, including, but not limited to preparing the dining room for meals and/or special functions (set up and/or close); provide helpful customer service to members and guests, and oversee the cleanliness protocol. Perform work in accordance with Institute and regulatory agencies (ServSafe), safety standards, and practices. Essential Job Duties Provides oversight, supervision, and direction to host/hostess, servers, bussers and bartenders during banquet and a la carte service at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Works with other departments and/or members to develop dining room set up for a la carte service and special functions. Coordinates and organizes dining room set-up with other staff. Oversees dining room clean-up and break-down. Locks up or closes the dining areas and the club according to set protocols at the end of the evening shift. Provides information and responds to members’ questions regarding services available at the club. Monitors and checks equipment in dining room area and notifies supervisor of any maintenance required. Should be knowledgeable of menu and any daily specials being offered. May prepare tableside service and/or take beverage orders according to specification; ensures member’s orders are delivered, presented, and served according to set protocols. Maintains maximum standards of sanitation and safety. Ensures the cleanliness and sanitation of server prep areas. Stocks server prep areas with required supplies. Provides management with observations on members’ needs and feedback (i.e. preferred foods, quality of services, etc). Takes part in opening and closing shifts and also in closing and reconciling POS as necessary. Takes reservations and creates seating chart and station assignments. May participate in inventory and/or place orders for supplies. Flexible work hours. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned. Basic Qualifications Minimum of 5 years progressively responsible supervisory/lead experience in a fine dining and/or banquet operation. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must have the ability to carry a minimum of 50 pounds (trays, chairs, tables and furniture) repetitively throughout the day and a maximum of 75 pounds occasionally. Ability to move, set-up, clear, and breakdown tables and chairs. Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, required. Must be able to communicate in English while performing assigned duties. Must be able to take food orders and serve. Must be able to read, write, and follow instructions in English. Must be a self-starter and able to prioritize multiple tasks; train staff, work with minimal supervision; exercise good judgment; be highly motivated and detail oriented. Must have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Must possess a ServSafe certification or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days from employment. Preferred Qualifications General food knowledge pertaining to sauces, cuts of meat, fish, methods of cooking, etc. including commonly served fish, most popular spices and herbs, different styles of cuisine (Cajun, Provencal, Northern/Southern Italian, etc.) and general knowledge of wine types such as red, white, sparkling, dessert, and American service (plated) in banquets. Familiarity with private club operations preferred. Experience working in a busy a la carte restaurant. TIPS certification.
