Department Summary Infrastructure Services provides flexible, reliable, and secure traditional and cloud infrastructure services (network services, platform services, data center operations and management, and unified communications) enabling connectivity, productivity, and security for UCLA. Platform Services enables hybrid cloud for computing, storage, and services environments with a mix of on-premises infrastructure, private cloud services, and public cloud. This team creates seamless orchestration across various platforms to enable agility, scalability, reliability, and lower infrastructure costs. This allows for applications and components to interoperate across boundaries improving developer productivity as well asregulatory compliance and security. Platform Services oversees provisioning, hosting, and administration of physical and virtual servers and related storage. Position Summary The Manager, Platform Engineering will play a pivotal role in overseeing the design and build of the university’s platform systems, including z/OS, Linux, and Windows. This Manager will advance the Infrastructure as a Code (IaaC) Automation Initiative, utilizing a range of automation tools to enhance platform architecture, engineering, and development. This role will emphasize a strategic focus on crafting robust platform solutions that align with overarching IT infrastructure goals. As leader of the Platform Engineering team, the Manager will also act as a primary liaison for customer onboarding. This will involve guiding clients through the design and implementation of managed IT services, ensuring that solutions are tailored to meet client-specific needs effectively. The Manager will be responsible for the strategic planning and implementation of mainframe retirement initiatives, while minimizing disruption to critical university operations. Additionally, the Manager will coordinate cross-functional teams, championing best practices in platform management to maintain robust, secure, and future-oriented services in a rapidly evolving educational environment. The Manager, Platform Engineering will positively impact UCLA’s operations and culture by optimizing platform development in service of the university’s academic mission. This team member will advance the University’s mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications Five years experience working in one or more of the following fields: platform services, information technology, IT service management, or related field. (Required) Two years experience leading teams in a management or leadership role, particularly in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. (Required) Significant experience in managing IT platforms and infrastructure, including cloud-based services, enterprise applications, and databases. (Required) Expertise in infrastructure design and development,technical architecture, and core enterprise applications. (Required) Demonstrated experience presenting complex technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders. (Required) Extensive experience solving technical and non-technical problems; able to delegate solutioning (Required) Experience as a point of escalation. (Required) Demonstrated experience providing inclusive leadership of others, cultivating an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. (Required) Has demonstrated experience leading in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment. (Required) Seven or more years experience working in one or more of the following fields: platform services, information technology, IT service management, or related field. (Preferred) Five or more years experience leading teams in a management or leadership role, particularly in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. (Preferred) Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university. (Preferred) Comprehensive understanding of IT platforms, virtualization, networking, and storage technologies. Familiarity with cloud computing, server management, and database administration. (Required) Knowledge of and support experience with Windows, Linux, VMware, AWS, SaaS, and related technologies. (Required) Knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, firewalls, and network security. Knowledge of and support experience with SAN/NAS storage environments (Required) Advanced written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate work assignments to medium-sized teams. (Required) Demonstrated leadership / management skills, including abilities in persuasion, negotiation, change management, and mentorship. (Required) Advanced project management skills with demonstrated experience delegating responsibility, tracking project progress, supervising others, and advising teams on competing priorities. (Required) Able to lead data gathering efforts seeking information from diverse sources. (Required) Understanding of how decisions affect teams. Ability to make decisions with integrity. (Required) Inspires creativity in others and advises teams on industry-leading practices, such as the incorporation of new technologies or processes. (Required) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations Bachelor’s Degree in one or more of the following fields: information technology, computer science, or related field, or equivalent experience/training. (Required) Special Conditions for Employment This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that includes regular visits to campus as needed (for those who work remotely, travel/lodging expenses are not eligible for reimbursement). The anticipated pay range for this position is $137,458.20 -$155,336.50, annually; salary is dependent upon the skills and experience of the selected finalist.
