Department Summary Established in 1969, the UCLA Asian American Studies Center (AASC) is a national research center dedicated to advancing historical, transformative and interdisciplinary scholarship that bridges research with community voices. The Institute of American Cultures houses the AASC along with the American Indian Studies Center, Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, and Chicano Studies Research Center. The centers are the only ethnic studies organized research units (ORU) among the 10 University of California campuses. The AASC advances research and the field of ethnic studies through publications, public programs and events, providing funding opportunities, maintaining the largest Asian American Studies library and archives in the U.S., housing 7 Endowed Chaired Professorships, and community partnerships with local, state, and national organizations. The Center has 13 staff and Faculty Advisory Committee made of 55 faculty members across campus. Position Summary Under the direction of the Co-Directors and Content Coordinator, this position will administer the editorial process for the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Multimedia Textbook, a project of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center. The AAPI Multimedia Textbook is a narrative change project that brings together distinguished scholarship, open access technology, and ethnic studies pedagogy to deepen public knowledge about who we are, strengthen students’ historical empathy and bring AAPI stories into every classroom. It is a free AAPI resource geared toward students and instructors in 9th-14th grade classrooms.The Senior Editor will review manuscripts of chapter narratives for logic, organization, style, and rational development of content, while also ensuring consistency between chapters throughout the textbook. The Senior Editor will work closely with the Content Coordinator, chapter authors, copyeditors, archivists, and chapter curriculum developers. Salary & Compensation *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications Proven ability to perform all aspects of the editorial process independently and manage complex projects with expertise in academic writing (e.g., using University of Chicago stylistic guidelines), with respect to content, logic, style, and presentation. (Required) Demonstrated working knowledge of Comparative Race Relations, Literature, History and the Humanities, Ethnic Studies, Labor Studies, or related field, or equivalent editorial or academic experience. (Preferred) Strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and spoken in dealing with scholars, students, editors, writers, reviewers and publishing personnel. (Required) Ability to do follow-up correspondence with authors and writers on their manuscripts. (Required) The ability to work in collaboration with various stakeholders, publications unit staff and other Center staff. (Required) Demonstrated proofreading skills to edit manuscripts, galleys, press releases, and websites. Proficient internet research skills. (Required) Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe In-Design Software (Required) Working knowledge of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. (Preferred) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations Bachelor’s Degree Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training (Required) Master’s Degree MA degree preferred or equivalent demonstrated editorial and writing experience with scholarly and/or professional and institutional materials.
