The Vaccine for Pandemic Preparedness Center and Vaccine Research and Development Center is led by Director Philip Felgner and the Department of Physiology and Biophysics in the School of Medicine. The Department of Physiology & Biophysics is dedicated to conducting innovative, cutting-edge research, engaging in high-level service and providing excellent educational opportunities and mentoring to students, postdoctoral fellows and residents in the discipline of physiology and biophysics. The Vaccine Research & Development and Vaccine Pandemic Preparedness Center (VRDC/VPPC) was founded by Dr. Felgner with a very strong multidisciplinary team that includes immunologists, chemists, physicians, molecular biologists, biomedical engineers, pharmaceutical scientists and formulation scientists. This Center encompasses many modern tools essential for vaccine discovery and development and utilizes analytical instrumentation available in physical sciences to formulate and characterize protein and mRNA vaccine formulations. The Center will also access the certified BSL3/ABSL3 core facility in Hewitt Hall and the associated National Training Center for Select Agent Research. The Center has been fully equipped and funded for Cancer therapy research and Vaccine research to assess immune profiling and efficacy of mRNA and adjuvanted protein vaccines against various BSL2 and BSL3 pathogens, including Influenza, Chlamydia, Q-fever, as well as Peribunyaviruses and Picornaviruses, for pandemic preparedness Your Role on the Team Reporting to VPPC/VRDC Director Philip Felgner, and CAO, Janita Parpana. The incumbent is responsible for oversight of all administrative/financial operations of the Vaccine for Pandemic Preparedness Center and Vaccine Research and Development CTR inter-disciplinary research. Research Unit with an annual budget of $12M and annual expenses of approximately $8M. Incumbent will be responsible for budgetary and financial management of federal and private contract and grants, subawards, gifts, unrestricted funds, sales and services, student fees and VPPC/VRDCs annual operating budget and reports. Incumbent will perform short-and long-term planning and projections of financial resources for VPPC projects/faculty. Duties also include preparing pre-award proposal submissions, preparing grant budgets, preparing proposal administrative sections such as biosketches, resources page and other support pages, post award contract and grants management, preparing grant renewals, and financial reports for sponsoring agencies and donors, procurement and facilities/space management activities, academic and staff HR functions, and contributing to organizational website content. May be expected to train and supervise support staff or students. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions while ensuring safety protocols and UC policies are followed. What It Takes to be Successful Required: Thorough knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management. Interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills. Knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines. Solid knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs. Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality. Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service. Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, and / or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees. Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution. Experience with contracts and grants (C&G) proposal submission and C&G management. Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training 5-10 years 5-10 years of experience in a university environment Special Conditions: May be occasionally asked to work evenings or weekends for Institute events.
