At UC Irvine’s Gavin Herbert Eye Institute and Department of Ophthalmology, our faculty of internationally recognized physicians, surgeons and scientists provide highly specialized training to future ophthalmologists, access to leading-edge clinical trials as well as sight-saving treatments and therapies for virtually any eye disorder. Eye surgeons, stem cell researchers, geneticists, infectious disease specialists and engineers are working on technologies and treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, corneal disease, and cataracts as well as a vaccine to prevent eye and genital herpes infections. These efforts have vaulted UC Irvine School of Medicine into the top echelons of U.S. institutions receiving National Institutes of Health grants for vision research. Your Role on the Team Under the guidance of the Department Chair and Department Administrator will oversee HR initiatives for the Department of Ophthalmology, encompassing faculty, residents, ACGME fellows, 2111 international fellows, academic researchers, postdocs, staff, and numerous volunteers/visitors from various units within Ophthalmology and across multiple locations in the Orange County area including Irvine, Orange, and Yorba Linda (future site). Primary responsibilities including developing and administering HR programs, recruitment, onboarding, compensation, training, compliance, employee relations, grievances, visa procurement with UCI International Center, and maintaining compliance with UC policies and accreditation standards. Additionally, the role involves limited financial administration related to salaries and payroll, maintaining compliance with employment laws, and indirect assistance (ex. collaborating, adaptability, and proactively supporting) of Ophthalmology’s education programs for visitors, volunteer researchers, observers, medical students, residents, and all fellows. As the HR Director, the incumbent will manage academic and staff personnel matters, performance management, benefits administration, and executing current initiatives that are conducive to a productive work environment. What It Takes to be Successful Required: Requires strong knowledge of organization and system academic HR polices, guidelines, and procedures. Requires political acumen and risk management awareness to prevent potentially litigious personnel actions. Comprehensive understanding of the academic review process. Able to provide guidance and coaching of process and policies to individual academics, unit management, and various committee groups. Able to interpret complex academic HR policies and procedures with risk management exposure to the organization. Strong decision making, analytical, problem solving, critical thinking, and resource management skills.
