Department Summary Research in the Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology (IBP) is dedicated to explaining the function of complex biological systems, in cells, organs, and individuals. The recent rapid advances in molecular and cell biology and genetics, including the sequencing of numerous genomes, has provided an unprecedented opportunity to use this new information to understand how the genes interact to produce emergent phenotypes in complex systems. Position Summary The Deters lab is looking for a Staff Research Associate II (SRAII) to join research projects involving patient-facing data collection. The employee will be involved in helping to establish a multi-site research study focused on MRI brain imaging. Dr. Kacie Deters research is focused on risk factors for cognitive aging and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), with a specific focus in the Black community. Future plans in the lab include building a Black aging cohort. Therefore, there is a preference for candidates who have experience and interest working with community organizations in the Black community of the greater Los Angeles area (e.g. local churches, senior centers, community centers). Responsibilities for the employee will include face-to-face engagement, recruitment, and management of study participants which includes, but is not limited to, the following activities: participant enrollment, participant informed consent, scheduling participant visits, MRI data acquisition, administer testing materials, track participant follow-up, updating the study database, ordering project supplies, and coordinate participant stipends and transportation. Experience managing Institutional Review Board (IRB) proposals is desired. The employee will be accountable for meeting internal and external deadlines under minimal supervision. Some flexibility in work hours for weekend or after-hours work is expected. Further opportunities for involvement in scholarly activities such as manuscript preparation and co-authorship, conference attendance, and presentation of results are also available as workload permits. The employee also has the opportunity to participate in other patient-facing activities ongoing in the lab. This includes in community- related events which occur both virtually and in-person. If in-person is an option, in person attendance is expected. Community events also come up unpredictably and can occur any day of the week. The employee will also need reliable transportation to and from events; transportation will be reimbursed. The Deters lab is currently run on a hybrid work schedule, where the week is split for in-office work and work from home days. The in-office work days rotate every quarter in order to reevaluate needs of the staff and trainees. Salary & Compensation *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications Experience managing IRB submissions. Experience with neuroimaging analysis. Experience with R, Linux, Bash, Python, FSL, FreeSurfer, and/or SPM software. Experience in clinical research setting with knowledge of HIPAA and GCP. Experiance with neuropsychological measures (e.g., NIH Tollbox, MoCA, UDS3). Ability to perform duties and tasks independently with minimal supervision. Ability to understand scientific protocols. Demonstrated ability to interact with laboratory coworkers in a manner conducive to productive cooperation. Demonstrated ability in communicating information in a timely and critical manner. Ability to maintain confidentiality with participant-related data. Prior experience in handling a variety of tasks with a high degree of accuracy (multitasking) and ability to set priorities when confronted with competing requests. Ability to meet tight deadlines and last minutes requests efficiently and accurately. Ability to conduct literature searches for knowledge essential for use in research. High level ability in use of a PC and all Windows applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Strong problem solving skills. Flexibility and adaptability in dynamic environment based on changing priorities and frequent interruptions. Prior knowledge or interest in aging and dementia research. Ability to order, receive, and organize lab supplies.
