DESCRIPTION West Los Angeles College (WLAC) is accepting applications for 0.40 faculty hourly time opportunity (C-Basis, maximum of 14 hours per week) for Phase 2 of WLAC’s Blue Economy and Climate Action Pathways (BECAP) Program. The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) has established the California Center for Climate Change Education (the Center) at WLAC, a first-of-its-kind, forward-looking resource that will help prepare students for good-paying, fulfilling careers in the clean energy and climate technology industries. The Center is accessible to students and staff from all nine LACCD campuses. The goal is to increase the number of underrepresented students who enroll in or transfer to four-year colleges and universities and return to the community as mentors and leaders. One way in which the Center is fulfilling its mandate (per AB 1913) is through the development a program called BECAP, which stands for Blue Economy and Climate Action Pathways. The BECAP project is one of the applications that got funded through the Los Angeles Regional Consortium Strong Workforce Program (SWP) 2023-24, Round 8, Regional Project Application. WLAC is applying for BECAP for Round 9 (2024-2025). BECAP aims to meet the emerging employment demands in ocean related labor markets in Los Angeles that are aligned with California state climate action and environmental justice priorities. WLAC joined other 13 colleges in the BECAP SWF Consortium with the commitment to leverage its Climate Change resources and expertise to strengthen regional initiatives that advance the above-listed goals via 1) the development of new degree programs, certificates and training opportunities that address emerging Blue Economy market needs, 2) improve career readiness, 3) support diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in professional pathways that have been mostly inaccessible to women, people of color, people with disabilities and low-income students, and 4) promote climate and environmental justice to ensure Blue Economy projects are designed and implemented in ways that improve environmental quality in underserved communities and protect the rights of people who have been historically disenfranchised. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS A degree from an accredited college or university that allows the individual to teach any discipline offered at WLAC. Professional or occupational experience must be reasonably related to assignment. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Demonstrated professional or occupational experience in climate change and environmental education, with special focus on Blue Economy related topics, and on environmental justice and on communication strategies used to educate non-science majors about the causes, consequences, and solutions to climate change. Prior experience in leadership positions on campus. Prior experience in designing, organizing, facilitating, and hosting the educational and professional development events for faculty and students. Knowledge and experience in developing and implementing Student Learning Outcomes, Program Planning, and developing Research/Accountability reports. Prior experience in collaborating with instructional departments/programs, community agencies, and industry leaders. Excellent communication skills. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Build upon the work that was done during Phase 1 of the BECAP program at WLAC (Round 8, 2023-2024) Attend BECAP and LARC meetings on a regular basis. Lead the development of new degree programs, certificates and training opportunities that address emerging Blue Economy and Climate Action market needs. Develop strategies and lead efforts to improve Blue Economy and Climate Action career readiness. Develop strategies and lead efforts to improve diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in professional pathways that have been mostly inaccessible to women, people of color, people with disabilities and low-income students. Develop strategies and lead efforts to ensure that Blue Economy projects are designed and implemented in ways that improve environmental quality in underserved communities and protect the rights of people who have been historically disenfranchised. Co-design and host new training workshops aimed at engaging and preparing WLAC faculty and students to address topics and practices related to coastal ecosystems conservation and restoration projects, integrated coastal management, environmental permitting issues, marine policy matters, community and stakeholders’ engagement practices, DEI, environmental justice, and the application of data analysis for the support of public decision making and business plan development; Coordinate meetings and discussion sessions for WLAC faculty, and external partners to develop and approve interdisciplinary curriculum development that prioritizes ocean conservation, climate action and environmental justice, in accordance with the guidelines established by the California Ocean Protection Council’s Ocean-Climate Agenda, and the Federal Ocean Climate Action Plan published by the Ocean Policy Committee ; If appropriate, co-organize Blue Economy and Climate Action-related special events, field trips and site visits for faculty and students to expand our networks and partnerships with host sites for internships, pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships, and other work-based learning opportunities.
