Your Role on the Team Position Summary: Under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), the Health Physicist is responsible for assisting with the development, management, implementation, and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the on-going medical and research radiation protection programs at multiple UCI Health locations. This includes. development and implementation of radiological safety policy and procedures, assuring compliance with all state and federal regulations concerning the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines, assisting with the administration of the UCI Health radioactive material license, clinical and laboratory monitoring and control, radiological security, emergency planning and response, and technical support for departments using radioactive materials. The Health Physicist provides expert-level radiation safety support for radiation safety staff, general and specific radiation safety training, and responds to radiological events. Must possess knowledge of California State and Federal laws, codes, regulations, guidelines and current technology pertaining to radiation safety, radioactive waste and radioactive material transportation. Must possess good communication and presentation skills Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics/Radiological Health, Medical Physics, or closely related scientific field. Must have working knowledge and experience in conducting effective radiation safety surveys and laboratory audits. Must have knowledge and practiced in clinical, research and laboratory-based operations with comprehensive understanding of complex health, safety, and environmental mandates. Must have demonstrated ability to design, develop, manage and implement elements of a Radiation Safety Program. Must be eligible to qualify as an alternate Radiation Safety Officer per the Code of Federal Regulations 10CFR35.50 Employment contingent upon completion of satisfactory background investigation. Position is subject to the California DMV’s ‘Pull Notice System’ and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record. 3-5 years experience beyond training in an academic/medical radiation safety program. Preferred Qualifications: Education, training and experience in MRI and laser safety is highly desirable. A graduate degree in Health Physics/Radiological Health, Medical Physics or certification eligibility by the American Board of Health Physics is highly desirable.
