Position Summary Under the direction of the Director of VIP Scholars, the Assistant Director (Program Representative III) will manage programs and operations for the VIP Scholars unit including supervision and training of staff, program development, outreach, developing and maintaining community and campus partnerships, student advising, serving as summer programs coordinator and resident director, supporting creation of and maintaining program budgets, assisting Director with funding applications, reports and research projects.Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required and live in residence hall during summer programs which range from two to five weeks in duration. Summer programs occur between the end of June through the beginning of August. Residential assignments will be shared with other program staff. The Assistant Director must professionally represent the University to the public, exercise a high-level of independent professional judgment, possess strong coordinating, supervisory, computer and communication skills and be extremely meticulous.UCLA’s VIP Scholars Program is a partnership between UCLA and schools and community organizations in Los Angeles County that prepares historically underrepresented students to become competitively eligible for admission to UCLA and other flagship universities, and to encourage pursuit of graduate and professional education, using a social justice framework and holistic approach. Salary & Compensation *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications Experience in development and coordination of programs to motivate and prepare special and/or socio-economically disadvantaged junior high school, high school, and community college students for future attendance at the University. (Required) Experience as resident advisor. (Preferred) Demonstrated skills in program planning, implementation, administration and evaluation with specially targeted students. Demonstrated skill in speaking clearly and distinctly using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and convey information to individuals at various organizational levels. (Required) Demonstrated skill in reading and interpreting written documents in standard English text such as admission requirements, University policy, and procedure manuals, etc. Demonstrated skill in setting priorities which accurately reflect relative importance of job responsibilities. (Required) Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff members, subordinates, school administrators and officials and representatives. Skill in speaking with persons of various cultural, social economic and educational backgrounds. (Required) Demonstrated English oral communications skills to address individuals and large audiences of prospective students, parents, and school and college representatives. (Required) Demonstrated working knowledge of the organizational structure of the participating high schools, California Community colleges and University of California segments with regard to such factors as location, student population, and academic programs. (Required) Supervisory skills to hire, train, evaluate and direct performance of assigned workers and to elicit a high degree of professionalism from them. (Required) Demonstrated skill in administrative logistics, particularly in paying attention to detail while handling multiple tasks. Interpersonal expertise and superior public speaking skills in order to visit high schools and community colleges to answer questions regarding the University’s admission requirements, available curricular and academic programs, housing, scholarships. (Required) Expertise in the interpretation of and implementation of policies and regulations in functional area, such as student housing, student government, student financial aid, student recreational and cultural activities, international student activities. (Required) Demonstrated skill in interpreting admission guidelines and in analyzing academic and test records to determine applicant eligibility. Specialized background or knowledge of outreach recruitment and retention; school relations; financial aid; housing; placement; learning skills counseling; admissions; and centralized aspects of student advising. Demonstrated working knowledge of California postsecondary educational opportunities and institutions. Working knowledge of the University and UCLA. (Preferred) Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Working knowledge of MS Office programs including MS Word, Excel, Access and Outlook and the Internet and ability to learn and use University online systems (such as OASIS, SIS, Counselor Desktop, etc.). (Required) Skill working with departments both on and off campus to achieve summer programs mission. (Required) Ability and judgment to deal with confidential and sensitive information with discretion and tact. Have own transportation. (Required) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations Bachelor’s Degree in related area or equivalent experience/training (Required) Special Conditions for Employment Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
