The Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Indigenous Americas-past and present. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples, cultures, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions, publications, and public programs, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. Also featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics, culture and social action. The Fowler provides exciting, informative and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond.
Position Summary
The Fowler Museum at UCLA is seeking experienced preparators and fabricators to join our crew for its Winter/Spring exhibitions.
Qualified candidates should have an interest in the arts and museum related work. Prior experience working in museum, gallery, cultural institution, or arts organizations is required. Applicants must have strong skills in carpentry and woodworking, fabrication, and art handling, as well as strong communication, organization, problem solving and critical thinking skills. This position is physically demanding with considerable lifting/building and full days on your feet. Candidates must be able to lift/move a minimum of 50 lbs. High school diploma or equivalent, with strong math and writing skills. (College level education preferred). Length of work would depend on the on exhibition schedule.
Salary & Compensation
*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications
Two years of preparatory experience in a museum field; or graduation from college with a major in a selected discipline, and one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination (Required)
A high level of skill in the use of tools, materials and fabrication techniques. This includes carpentry and cabinet making, welding and brazing, acrylic forming, electronics, casting and the use of a wide range of paints and adhesives (Required)
Skills in the production of exhibition graphics. This includes drafting, illustrations, computer systems, dry mounting, cold mounting, silk-screen, INT, cut-vinyl graphics, transfer type, paste-up, matte-cutting and framing (Preferred)
Knowledge of production techniques and equipment required for audio-visual programs. (Preferred)
Ability to read and interpret exhibition floor plans and construction drawings (Required)
Skill in working as part of a team and ability to effectively collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and other contributors and museum representatives. Ability to problem solve and initiate appropriate action (Required)
Strong ability to assist in preparation of galleries including patching, painting, and minor construction. (Required)
Skill in the proper operation and maintenance of all basic power tools used in the preparation of exhibits. (Required)
Ability to read fabrication designs and techniques from schematic instructions. (Required)
Ability to organize time, set priorities and perform effectively under time constraints. (Required)
Knowledge in proper handling and safe installation of museum objects. Knowledge of appropriate museum practices and procedures including conservation, artifact handling and security. (Preferred)
Ability to perform occasional heavy manual labor, including lifting or moving objects that weigh more than 50 pounds and crates weighing hundreds of pounds, use power and hand tools, and climb ladders. (Required)
Ability to work with materials (feathers, fur, hair, fibers, natural dyes, etc.) that may aggravate allergies (Required)
