Job Description Come join our team! The Genetic Counselor II will provide genetic counseling following established genetic counseling practice guidelines in a variety of settings including cancer genetics clinic, prenatal clinic, pediatric clinic, cardiovascular clinic, neurology clinic, and other settings as appropriate. Primary Duties & Responsibilities Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled. Demonstrates knowledge, competency skills and intervention techniques in GC clinical services. Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost. Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork. Interacts and communicates regular with the medical geneticist(s) and/or supervising physician(s). Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and/or supervising physician. Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support. Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients. Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her/himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary. Provides counseling in accordance w/applicable standards of professional care. Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature. Stays current in GC field. Provides case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling. Contributes to quality/development of clinical services, participates in specialty sections, and coordinates specific services or specific projects. Actively participates in outreach, education, and training activities. Qualifications Qualifications Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling required Minimum of two (2) years experience in genetic counseling and competent in all genetic counselor core functions required. American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification required upon hire. American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMG) Certified Counselor certification issued prior to 1991 may still be considered.
