Associate Dean of Students for Middle School University of California Los Angeles Requisition Number: JPF10345 The Associate Dean of Students for Middle School works under the guidance and direction of the Dean of Students and School Culture to address student disciplinary issues and culture and climate as it relates to students in grades 6-8, and is in constant and close communication with major constituencies in the school including students, parents, and educators. The Associate Dean of Students’ work will focus closely on ensuring a developmentally appropriate and humane transitional experience for entering students and classes, as well as developing programming and content to ensure the middle school student body is acculturated to the norms and philosophies of the school. The Associate Dean of Students will also serve as the Summer Program Director for Geffen Academy’s summer program, which serves both Middle School and Upper School students. The Associate Dean of Students will work closely with the Middle School Division Director, the Learning Specialist office, Assistant Middle School Academic Dean, and the Dean of Students and School Culture to monitor student learning and progress and behavioral and social-emotional wellbeing. They will attend important middle school events and co-create and curate events with the Dean of Students and School Culture and other departments. They may also be an advisor to other select middle school programs and/or clubs. Responsibilities and Duties: Serve as a resource for Middle School educators on culture and climate building in their classrooms. Serve as primary point person for educators, advisors, students, and parents when addressing student behavioral/disciplinary issues in grades 6-8. Attend student support team meetings and bi-weekly Middle School Leadership Team meetings and contribute as a co-lead to student support plans. Ensure that Risk Management, Legal, and Geffen Academy’s business and administration teams are consulted with and that policies and procedures are executed in accordance with direction provided. Assess and report incidents to appropriate school officials within the appropriate timeframes and or government agencies as and when necessary and mandated by law. With the support of the Dean of Students and School Culture, Middle School Division Director, and other key educators, be the lead in creating and implementing relevant programming for Middle School Students (including, but not limited to, grade level retreats, Welcome Day, Orientation, community time assemblies, field trips, student clubs, student council, and other programming as influenced by current events). Ensure that activities and programs under the Student Life Department align with the University of California’s policies and procedures when applicable. Continuously utilize feedback loops to respond to student behavioral trends to address situations on individual and group/cohort levels. Summer Program Director Duties: Maintain subject matter expertise in university academic personnel policies and procedures as they pertain to summer appointments. Work closely with the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer (CFAO) in relation to financial forecast, including revenue projections and completing the program’s strategic plan. Conduct all recruitment stages and hiring summer educators, including developing an internal and external recruitment plan, drafting and updating the Summer Educator job descriptions, interviewing all candidates, partnering with Human Resources to make contingent offers of employment, and conducting the employee onboarding orientation. Supervise all Summer Educators for the duration of the Summer School Program. Develop new summer school course descriptions and update current course descriptions as needed. Draft parent communications, including content for the general Geffen Academy parent newsletters in collaboration with the business office. Manage all customer service for students and families with questions, needs, or concerns during the summer program. Update the website and Family Summer School Handbook.
