Assistant Controller, Financial Services Under the supervision of the AVP of Finance / Controller, this position is responsible for MSMU’s accounting operations, with oversight of the general ledger, payroll, accounts payable and other financial reporting functions. The incumbent will assist in the preparation of MSMU’s audited financial statements, as well as assisting in monitoring the institution’s endowment, operating cash, and non-operating cash positions. This position will provide support and guidance to MSMU Accounting staff as needed. Work Location: Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles). Start Date: Immediately Annual Salary Rate Range: $115,000.00 – $120,000.00 Monthly Salary Rate Range: $9,583.34 – $10,000.00 Hiring salary can be above the posted pay range if candidate’s qualifications are determined to be above the minimum requirements of the position description. Duties and Responsibilities: Assists in managing the monthly close activities to ensure a timely and accurate close in accordance with GAAP, including reviewing and posting monthly journal entries, reclasses, adjustments and general ledger account reconciliations Responsible for the accurate journal entry recording of transactions related to MSMU’s long-term debt, leases, prepaid amortization, fixed assets, annuitants’ obligation, and other entries as assigned Assists Associate VP Finance & Controller with creating and updating departmental policies and procedures. Provide training and guidance to staff and University members to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures Assists the Associate VP Finance & Controller with creating, modifying, documenting, coordinating and implementing accounting controls within the organization Assists Associate VP Finance & Controller with maintaining vendor and contract relationships. Oversee the Payroll Department ensuring that all University Payrolls are processed timely and accurately in accordance with University policies Responsible for the timely and accurate submission of University retirement plan contributions to the third-party administrator. Supervises the Accounts Payable unit to ensure timely and accurate payments to all University vendors in accordance with University policies, including managing the corporate credit card program Oversee Grant Accounting function, including reconciling staff and faculty payroll, tracking multi-year grant budgets, and supervising the Senior Grant Accountant Prepares and submits governmental reports including annual County Assessor property reports and various federal government surveys Assists Associate Controller in monitoring the institution’s operating and non-operating cash positions, ensuring that sufficient funds are available to meet ongoing operational and capital investment requirements Monitors and utilizes as needed forfeiture and revenue credit account balances to affect contributions as well as qualified retirement plan related expenses Oversees the University’s 403(b) retirement plan audit and serve as main point of contact to the external auditors Assists in MSMU’s Federal Uniform Guidance and State Child Development Center audits, and the preparation of the University’s financial statements Responsible for the creation and distribution of ad-hoc financial reports as requested Provides excellent customer service to faculty, staff and students Provides leadership and professional development to departmental staff Performs other duties and special projects as assigned Other Duties and Responsibilities: Provides general ledger information to departments as requested. Prepare financial information as needed for third-party financial surveys Provides assistance to Student Accounts Office and Financial Aid Office, as requested, on student billings and financial aid issues Performs other job-related duties, as assigned Job Requirements: Knowledge: GAAP, college accounting and general understanding of in-house computer systems Strong working knowledge of Excel Working knowledge of GAAS General understanding of Accounting Software for colleges, as well as, banking software Payroll management supervision Familiarity with grants Abilities and Skills: Strong technical, analytical, organizational, presentation, interpersonal and oral/written communication skills Detail-oriented. Independently handle and complete a variety of tasks efficiently, accurately and in a timely manner Interpret and apply GAAP Communicate financial information both to non-financial users and outside financial agencies Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. CPA a plus.
