Department Summary

From the beginning, Startup UCLA has sought to develop a culture of startup thinking on campus, to connect students with alumni who are successful in the startup world, to give students opportunities to learn the basics of startup thinking, and to provide a community in which students can develop and launch their early-stage ideas. It quickly became evident that UCLA students/alumni are passionate about being entrepreneurs by the attendance at on-campus entrepreneurship events, the growing number of Summer Accelerator applications each year, and the creation of student groups such as Bruin Entrepreneurs.
Position Summary

The Assistant Director & Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR) reports to the Executive Director, Entrepreneurial Programs, and also has work assigned by the Director of the Summer Accelerator & Strategic Partnerships; works with minimal supervision and is expected to complete projects without oversight, except where policy issues and exceptional situations arise; provides entrepreneurial expertise for the programs under Startup UCLA, as well as newly created initiatives. As a self-starter and a team player, the Assistant Director-EIR is highly committed with a “no job is too big, no job is too small” responsive problem-solving entrepreneurial mindset. The Assistant Director-EIR will be action oriented with the ability to execute from idea to implementation with and without direction from the Executive Director. Will also take on specific projects to support Startup UCLA’s mission in cultivating UCLA’s entrepreneurship ecosystem. The Assistant Director-EIR is evaluated annually for contract renewal. The position is being funded by a Blackstone LaunchPad grant. Programs under Startup UCLA: 1. Blackstone LaunchPad (year-round) 2. Summer Accelerator (10 weeks) 3. UCLA Innovation Fellows (5 months) 4. Social Entrepreneurship Summer Institute (2 weeks)

Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications

  • 1. Excellent organizational, multitasking skills and problem solving skills to facilitate and lead planning efforts from idea conception through implementation. High level of initiative and energy with an entrepreneurial spirit. (Required)
  • 2. Demonstrated skill and ability in managing programs, projects and activities as demonstrated by creating ideas, determining procedures or courses of action, selecting methods and implementation and prioritizing program objectives and tasks. (Required)
  • 3. Demonstrated proficiency in Office 365, Google Suite, Slack, WordPress, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and other tech tools to manage, access, analyze, and format data for a variety of interior and exterior purposes. (Required)
  • 4. Demonstrated ability in data collection and analysis for program reporting, as well as evaluating data to inform and support iterative decision making processes. (Required)
  • 5. Demonstrated experience in planning and producing events. (Required)
  • 6. Demonstrated experience in creating programming for student ventures, including developing and presenting startup specific workshops and scheduling entrepreneur, technical, and investor talks. (Required)
  • 7. Supervisory skills to train, delegate, direct, lead, and monitor the work of others. (Required)
  • 8. Demonstrated experience in coaching, mentoring, and advising early-stage entrepreneurs regarding how to develop their startup ideas. (Required)
  • 9. Experience with working effectively on a university campus with students, faculty, staff, administration, and programs. (Preferred)
  • 10. Experience as a business advisor, mentor, or investor. (Preferred)
  • 11. Experience in a product management role. (Preferred)
  • 12. Experience in social enterprise, non-profit, and philanthropy sections (Preferred)
  • Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field and / or equivalent experience / training (Required)
  • Master’s Degree in related field and / or equivalent experience / training (Preferred)
  • Special Conditions for Employment

  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
