Department Summary Library Special Collections (LSC) builds and stewards special collections resources, services, and operations. The department consists of three units: Curatorial; Collection Management; and Public Services, Outreach, and Community Engagement (PSOCE). The Curatorial Unit is responsiblefor collection development and acquisition of materials in support of research and teaching. The Collection Management Unit makes collection material discoverable and accessible through ethical and iterative processing. The Public Services, Outreach, and Community Engagement Unit integrates public-facing operations for LSC including reference and instruction, exhibits, programmatic events and activities, outreach and community engagement, as well as the Center for Primary Research and Training. The entire staff of approximately 30 FTE work together holistically as a team to build, preserve, and provide access to the outstanding special collections of the UCLA Library. LSC works closely with our colleagues within the distinctive collections portfolio to steward a range of international resources in support of UCLA’s mission for the betterment of our global society. Position Summary Reporting to the Head of the Public Services, Outreach, and Community Engagement (PSOCE) unit, the Public Services Coordinator (PSC) oversees Library Special Collections’ front-facing services. The PSC supervises 4 FTE staff to facilitate equitable, efficient services in support of broad public access. As part of the PSOCE team, the PSC works collaboratively to define, implement, and enforce LSC policies, procedures, and workflows. The PSC is a highly collaborative role interfacing within LSC and the UCLA Library to provide efficient and optimal service. Salary & Compensation *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications Experience working in a special collections public services environment in a university or college setting, or in a large academic library. (Required) Demonstrated experience planning, implementing, and assessing user-centered services (Required) Demonstrated experience supervising staff, including training, assigning duties, evaluating, and creating a productive and satisfactory work environment. (Required) Experience working with and handling rare manuscripts, books, and art, as well as knowledge of basic preservation practices related to special collections environments and material. (Preferred) Skill and ability to work independently and remain on task to complete assigned work and to follow through on assignments with minimal direction. (Required) Ability to follow directions from supervisors (and to provide clear directions to staff and student employees). (Required) Skill in problem solving and the ability to work independently and exercise good judgment. (Required) Ability to initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and managers. Ability to work harmoniously and as a team player, thrive in a team-based environment, and skill in fostering teamwork among others. (Required) Excellent oral communication skills, specifically to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and to effectively present information in group settings. (Required) Ability to organize and prioritize heavy workloads characterized by a broad range of challenges, such as frequent interruptions and constant changes in projects. (Required) Physical ability to lift, shift, shelve cartons weighing up to 25 pounds, push fully-loaded book trucks, and climb ladders to reach tall book stacks. (Required) Experience working with and handling rare manuscripts, books, and art, as well as knowledge of basic preservation practices related to special collections environments and material. (Preferred) Previous experience utilizing Aeon (or related special collections workflow management tool) to document collection paging, duplication, and tracking. (Preferred) Skill and ability to gather, input, and assess user statistics.
