Role Summary
This position handles the setup and operation of CNC turning equipment. The technician reviews job instructions, prepares tooling, and ensures each part meets the required dimensions and quality standards.
Core Responsibilities
Level I
Prepare the machine by selecting appropriate tooling, workholding, and setup components.
Load programs and run preliminary checks to confirm proper movement and alignment.
Verify that the machine follows programmed paths before starting production.
Measure the first part produced using precision instruments to confirm compliance with specifications.
Support daily production needs and assist with general shop duties when required.
Level II (includes Level I tasks)
Complete advanced setups on a variety of CNC turning machines with little direction.
Organize and plan complex setups by reviewing drawings, job instructions, and required tooling.
Gather fixtures, gauges, cutters, and materials listed on the job packet.
Replace inserts or load preset tools, adjust wear offsets, and validate program readiness.
Confirm spindle positions, toolpaths, and machine function prior to production.
Inspect all produced parts to ensure accuracy throughout the job run.
Watch machine performance and make adjustments as needed to maintain quality.
Complete thorough first-piece inspections that include material verification, dimensional checks, and documentation.
Suggest improvements to reduce setup time, limit unnecessary steps, or improve tooling and fixture efficiency.
Make minor program adjustments to improve consistency or meet delivery requirements.
Provide support and informal training to junior team members.
Qualifications
High school diploma required.
Two or more years of experience working with CNC equipment in a machining environment.
Understanding of metalworking processes or relevant technical coursework preferred.
Proficiency in using micrometers, calipers, indicators, and other measuring tools.
Strong attention to detail, ability to work independently, and a teamwork mindset.
Self-starter who takes ownership of tasks and maintains a steady workflow.
Physical Requirements
Frequent use of hands and measurement tools.
Regular walking, reaching, communicating, and sitting or standing as needed.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
Requires close range and distance vision, color recognition, depth perception, and the ability to shift focus.
