What will you be doing in this role? The Senior Medical Laboratory Assistant functions with minimal supervision by senior technical/clinical personnel.Responsibilities include receiving, processing and distributing laboratory specimens or blood from voluntary blood donors, communicating information about tests and test results and overseeing the orientation and training of new employees. The MLA, Sr., serves as a problem-solving resource and acts as a Lead MLA in the absence of a supervisor. Performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to the patient populations(s) being served. Logs onto the LIS patient demographic data, specimen collection information, and test orders. Transports, labels, processes or prepares, distributes, preserves, and stores patient specimens. Operates and maintains selected laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, cell washers, balances, or tissue processors. Attends to routine operational and support functions such as preparing solutions/reagents, stocking supplies, disposing of specimens, cleaning and sterilizing glassware, or maintaining and storing records. Verifies specimen identification, assesses appropriateness of test orders and quality of specimen by recognizing factors that affect procedures and results; takes appropriate action when corrections are indicated. Identifies patients and patient samples by strict adherence to established procedures; labels samples accurately and completely. Assumes responsibility of a lead MLA as assigned, coordinates area activities by setting work priorities, and adjusts the MLA bench assignment in absence of a supervisor. Reports test results to appropriate individuals and comply with HIPAA and patient privacy regulations. Participates in special projects or assignments. Depending on area of responsibility, may perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Requirements: High school diploma or its equivalent. Two (2) yeas of clinical laboratory experience, including familiarity with laboratory information systems.
