Laboratory, Safety, and Research Coordinator, Biology / Physical Sciences Manages all activities of science laboratories to assist faculty in teaching and research programs in the Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences Departments. Work Location: Chalon Campus (West Los Angeles) Start Date: Immediately Applications Deadline: Open until filled Position Hourly Rate Range: $27.33-$29.66 Hiring salary can be above the posted pay range if candidate’s qualifications are determined to be above the minimum requirements of the position description. Duties and Responsibilities: Laboratory Operations & Instructional Support Prepare reagents, solutions, and laboratory materials for Biology and Physical Science courses, ensuring all requested materials and equipment are available prior to scheduled classes. Set up laboratory materials in a timely manner to support instructional activities. Maintain consistent availability of reagents, supplies, and equipment to support weekly laboratory operations. Provide technical and instructional support during laboratory sessions as needed. Maintain current knowledge of best practices, technologies, and regulatory changes in the field Safety & Compliance Serve as Safety Coordinator, including: Developing, writing, and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Supporting development and enforcement of safety policies and procedures Ensuring compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, local, state, federal, and institutional regulations Serve as the primary point of contact for safety-related matters, including incident reporting, inspections, and regulatory communication. Coordinate and deliver safety training for students, faculty, and staff. Maintain accurate chemical inventories, including labeling, storage, and tracking of materials. Maintain and ensure accessibility of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all laboratory users. Ensure proper handling, labeling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials in accordance with safety regulations. Coordinate hazardous waste collection and disposal processes on both campuses with other departments (Facilities, Art, etc.). Ensure submission of annual hazardous materials report(s) to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Maintain current safety certifications and training, including Safety Coordinator credentials and CPR/AED/First Aid. Participate in institutional safety committees and represent the STEM departments in university-wide safety initiatives. Inventory, Purchasing & Budget Management Manage procurement of laboratory supplies, reagents, and equipment, including vendor coordination, purchase orders, and invoice processing. Maintain accurate budget records and purchasing documentation for each departmental and grant-funded account. Track and manage inventory of laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment. Equipment & Facilities Coordinate installation, calibration, preventive maintenance, and repair of laboratory equipment in compliance with applicable regulations and service contracts. Collaborate with Facilities and external partners on laboratory renovations, equipment installation, and infrastructure projects. Maintain laboratory organization, cleanliness, and operational readiness. Maintain poster printer by monitoring ink, ink trap, and paper levels, and ordering and installing replacements when necessary. Coordination, Communication & Administration Coordinate laboratory scheduling and use of instructional spaces. Communicate regularly with faculty to support course planning, lab preparation, and instructional needs. Represent the university in interactions with vendors and external partners. Supervision & Additional Support Supervise and train laboratory assistants and student employees. Coordinate and support poster printing for courses and research activities. Assist faculty with research activities, including summer projects, as needed. Perform other job-related duties when necessary . Job Requirements: Knowledge: Occupational health and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA standards, hazard communication, chemical and laboratory safety) Environmental health and safety (EHS) best practices, including waste handling, disposal and emergency procedures Developing and maintaining a comprehensive Safety Management Plan (SMP), including risk assessment, mitigation strategies, and continuous improvement processes Designing and delivering safety training programs and ensuring employee compliance with safety protocols Ability to lead and coordinate safety inspections, audits, and emergency preparedness planning Molarity, metric units of measurement, and conversion factors sufficient to calculate quantities of chemicals needed Sterile technique to reduce risk of contamination Calibration and adjustment techniques as applied to laboratory equipment Laboratory skills sufficient to perform accurate weighing, mixing, and pH adjustment Basic computer skills (familiarity with spreadsheet, internet, e-mail, database applications, etc.) The general principles of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics as attained through science course work leading to a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field The operation of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, stir/hot plates, water baths, dry baths, meters, microscopes, incubators, laboratory water system, electrophoresis equipment, autoclaves, spectrometers, gas and liquid chromatographs Abilities and Skills: Effectively organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks to meet established deadlines Plan proactively to support peak periods and ensure timely preparation of laboratory activities Exercise sound judgment, critical thinking, and decision-making in daily operations Gather and evaluate information through observation, documentation review, and stakeholder input Communicate effectively with faculty to coordinate schedules, lab setup, and instructional needs Build and maintain collaborative working relationships across departments Provide clear instructions and guidance to ensure adherence to procedures Work effectively both independently and as part of a team Supervise and support technicians, student workers, or assistants as assigned Demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity within a diverse academic environment Lift, transport, and handle laboratory materials and equipment safely Distinguish colors visually as required for laboratory work Education: Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field Preferred: Master’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry or related field Experience: A minimum of two years of laboratory experience including reagent preparation and ordering responsibilities. Experience following and enforcing laboratory safety standards. Familiarity with undergraduate laboratory courses. Other Requirements: Background check required by policy.
