Assistant Director of Sports and Recreation Programs, Sports Recreation and Wellness

The Assistant Director of Sports and Recreation Programs, reports to the Associate Director of Sports, Recreation, and Wellness (SRW), this key position is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating all sports and recreation programming within the department. The Assistant Director will supervise a team of student managers and peer wellness advocates to offer the Mount community with diverse and engaging programs within the areas of sport competitions, fitness, outdoor adventures, and recreational gaming, playing a vital role in enhancing the overall student recreation experience. The Assistant Director will be responsible for program evaluation and learning assessment of the recreation program while working collaboratively with the departments in SRW and Student Affairs.

Work Location: Both, Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles) and Chalon Campus (West Los Angeles). Hybrid work schedule available.

Annual Salary Rate Range: $68,640.00 – $74,131.20

Monthly Salary Rate Range: $5,720.00 – $6,177.60

Hiring salary can be above the posted pay range if candidate’s qualifications are determined to be above the minimum requirements of the position description.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Program Development and Implementation:

  • Directly advises student leadership of Club Sports on all administrative and financial matters for the clubs.
  • Develops risk management protocol for Club Sports programs, including travel guidelines, emergency response, and on campus injury protocol.
  • Advises student managers and peer wellness advocates for recreation programming on development of all student recreation programs such as sport competitions, fitness incentive challenges, and recreational gaming opportunities.
  • Collaborates with external partners to create and offer outdoor adventure programs and attend all overnight trips.
  • Prepares weekly reports of activities and manage program-related communications.
  • Creates and supervises group fitness offerings for diverse student populations and schedules.
  • Develops and assesses co-curriculum for experiential learning for all recreation programming.

2. Supervision and Training:

  • Develops and administers training for student leadership of Club Sports.
  • Supervises, trains, schedules, and evaluates Student Workers for Recreation Programming.
  • Supervises, trains, schedules and evaluates Group Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers.
  • Ensures all Clubs Sports maintain one student safety officer with an active CPR/FA/AED and Outdoor Training certification.
  • Maintains active inventory of all recreation program equipment.
  • Develops, implements and maintains student development program for Peer Wellness Advocates for Recreation Programming, encouraging involvement in external programs such as NIRSA or NASPA.

3. Outreach and Relationship Building:

  • Builds relationships with campus partners and participate in alumni relations efforts.
  • Remains current with best practice and professional organizations.
  • Researches and builds relationships with external partners to offer health education opportunities specifically aimed at movement and physical wellness.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides support to the Sports, Recreation & Wellness department and various facilities as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external partners to support delivery of programs and services that enhance the general education and development of students.
  • Participates in various Student Affairs Division and university committees and task forces as requested
  • Performs other job-related duties, as assigned.

Job Requirements:
Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of and experience working with intramural sport programming and scheduling software (i.e Fusion platform; FusionWave, FusionPlay etc).

Abilities and Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Sports Management, Physical Education, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in a related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of recreational programming experience, preferably in a collegiate recreational environment.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with budget management and administrative functions and program evaluation/learning assessment report writing related to recreational programming.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with students in leadership roles and/or supervision of student employment.
  • Experience with recreational gaming and E-Sports competitions.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification or acquisition within 90 days of employment. Outdoor Training Certification within 90 days of employment.
