Assistant Professor of Biostatistics: 2025 DataX University of California Los Angeles Requisition Number: JPF09913 Applications are invited for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Biostatistics at the UCLA Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health ( http://www.biostat.ucla.edu ). The ideal candidate will have demonstrated scholarly excellence, a strong record of peer-reviewed publications commensurate with stage of research career, and clear potential to lead both methodological and collaborative research in biostatistics and health data science, while securing external funding and excelling in teaching, inspiring and mentoring doctoral students. We are seeking expertise in the broad area of statistics, biostatistics, data science, or related fields, including – but not limited to- causal inference with an interest on the use of causal inference tools for development of enhanced machine learning algorithms that optimize not only predictive power but also algorithm stability and fairness, algorithmic fairness, personalized medicine, biobank data, electronic health records, and emerging machine learning and artificial intelligence methods. This search is co-sponsored by DataX, a campus-wide initiative to improve data science by strengthening our robust, diverse and cross-disciplinary community of evidence and data-driven scholars. DataX aims to enable, empower, enhance, and coordinate existing capabilities across campus. The Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost have sponsored this search in order to recruit exceptional scholars whose teaching, scholarship and service strengthens fundamental data science in the disciplines. Faculty hired through this search are expected to be active participants in the DataX community, so building inclusive data-centric research and education across the UCLA campus. The Fielding School of Public Health (FSPH) is located on the main UCLA campus in direct proximity to the other health sciences schools (Medicine, Dentistry, and Nursing), several professional schools, and the College of Letters and Science. The UCLA Department of Biostatistics has a strong history of and commitment to interdisciplinary research and collaboration. The FSPH strategic plan has identified data science and big data as priority areas for faculty hiring. Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent qualification in statistics, biostatistics, or related fields. Faculty appointment level and salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications. Salary range: The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See UC Table 1. A reasonable estimated nine-month salary range for the Assistant Professor position is $139,125 – $182,350, inclusive of the salary scale and off-scale salary components (i.e. a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions). The 9-month month base salary can be supplemented with 3 months of summer salary from the candidate’s grants and contracts. Based on the candidate’s contract and grant activity, the candidate may also be eligible to participate in the School’s Negotiated Salary Trial Program (NSTP) plan, where the candidate has the ability to generate a higher annual salary.
