AY26 – Counselor, Family Resource Center Limited SFP LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT P ROFESSIONAL O PPORTUNITIES LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT P ROFESSIONAL O PPORTUNITIES LOS ANGELES VALLEY COLLEGE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT AY26 – COUNSELOR, Family Resource Center SFP (Limited) 0.50 FTE ASSIGNMENT D Basis DEADLINE TO FILE: December 5, 2025 The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) announces an opening for a Counselor 0.50 FTE (Family Resource Center- Limited) at Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC). LAVC, one of the nine colleges in the LACCD is located in the San Fernando Valley. With an enrollment of approximately 20,000 students, LAVC offers a wide range of academic and career technical education programs, and transfers students to leading public and private colleges and universities. The LAVC Counseling Department consists of experienced and professionally trained faculty who work with students concerning educational goals, career planning, transfer to four-year institutions, and other academic and personal issues affecting student success. The department includes counselors who work as general counselors and those who work in programs providing specialized services to targeted groups of students. JOB DESCRIPTION The Family Resource Center at LAVC is accepting applications for one 0.5 limited counselor to begin January 1, 2026, with an ending date of December 30, 2026. This position may be renewed if funding is available. This assignment will be for 17.5 hours per week. This position is in-person. The major responsibility of the candidate is to provide comprehensive, academic and career counseling services to student parents, who come from a diverse and multicultural populations. The Counseling assignment will fall on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Department Chairperson and the Dean of Student Life duties may include but are not limited to: Provide academic, career, transfer and personal counseling to student parents who are low income, educationally disadvantaged in-person. Conduct orientations to familiarize students with college programs, services, and mutual responsibilities. In addition, familiarize students with the college environment, program, services, registration procedures, college rules and regulations and the transfer process. Use multiple measures to develop individual, multi-semester educational plans. Assist in assessing students in reading, English, math, academic deficiencies, career and other assessment. Assess needs, recommend success strategies, and monitor student progress. Assist students with transfer to four-year institutions and/or to find career employment. Assist with the following petitions, appeals and waivers: graduation, financial aid, remedial coursework, academic dismissal, reinstatement and course repetition. Maintain accurate notes, records and files; prepares reports; and other related written materials. Schedule, plan and conduct group workshops for current student parents. Refer students to appropriate college programs and community agencies. Write letters of recommendation for students. Evaluate transcripts in collaboration with the Graduation Office. Collaborate with other counselors in special programs such as, CalWORKs, EOPS, and CDC. Participate in LAVC and FRC outreach and recruitment activities, events, advisory committee meetings, graduation and other events. Participate in professional development workshops and conferences. Use ConexEd, People Soft, and other technologies. Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, marriage and family therapy, social work or career development, or the equivalent; A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS : A medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant’s expense prior to employment. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT: COVID 19 VACCINATION Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee’s Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees’ policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date SALARY AND BENEFITS : The Los Angeles Community College District determines placement on the pay scale depending on verified education and employment history. Current starting annual salary range is from: $42,060 – $75,080 for the 12-month academic year depending on education and experience. The doctoral differential is $2,435 per academic year. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance for employees and eligible dependents, life insurance and (State Teachers Retirement System) retirement program. DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Two (2) years or more of paid work experience, post Master’s Degree , working as a counselor at a California community college within the past five (5) years. Prior experience working with student parents. Prior experience working with low income, educationally disadvantaged, Experience teaching Counseling or Guidance classes, conducting workshops and orientations. Extensive knowledge of the transfer process and requirements, articulation agreements, matriculation, graduation requirements, and Student Learning Outcomes. Knowledge of the major career development theories, current trends in career counseling, career development resources (both printed as well as computerized), and experience using and interpreting a variety of career assessments. Experience and sensitivity in counseling and teaching students who may be first generation, non-native speakers, academically under-prepared, non-traditional, or returning students. Experience working as a team member on department and campus-wide committees and groups. Experience in the use of computer technology as a counseling and teaching tool, including using web-based resources and other technology to create Student Educational Plans and enhance services to students. Experience with delivery of service in a remote environment. Knowledge of ConexED and PeopleSoft student information systems preferred.
