We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.

Position Overview:

Boeing Defense Space & Security is seeking a Guidance, Navigation and Control (GN&C) Engineer to join our Experimental Systems Group (ESG) located in Seal Beach, CA. ESG supports a variety of government customers spanning technology domains, and is an extremely fast-paced, responsive development environment specializing in delivering new capabilities to customers rapidly and affordably. The ESG portfolio consists of a range of platforms and technologies including the X-37B, the world’s first fully autonomous reusable spaceplane.

As a member of our GN&C team, you will join a highly experienced and mission-focused team of engineers specializing in hypersonic re-entry and aircraft GN&C. We work closely with Business Development teams and our customers. We rapidly prototype new concepts then deploy and iterate our designs and systems. As an engineer working in this area you will typically be engaged across multiple projects and involved in simulation development, system analysis, GN&C requirements and software development, integration, operational concept development, and flight test in both atmospheric and space environments. Our development timelines are aggressive and you will be asked to develop solutions to previously unsolved problems.

An ideal candidate has a strong technical background in atmospheric aerodynamics and guidance, solid fundamentals in linear algebra, experience with simulation and mathematical modeling, is comfortable with MATLAB and Simulink, and has experience with C/C++ or is generally proficient in programming languages. You will need to be able to work effectively in broad, minimally-defined design spaces.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Apply aerodynamics, atmospheric flight mechanics, and controls knowledge to support the design of re-entry guidance and navigation functions

  • Gathers, defines and documents system level requirements to support re-entry mission and trajectory requirements

  • Performs and documents design and analysis of Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) models and tools

  • Develop and maintain 6-DOF spacecraft dynamics sim and associated analysis tools

  • Implement, test, and verify the performance of spacecraft GN&C flight software

  • Support troubleshooting of routine operational anomalies, functional tests and service incidents

  • Support technology integration for and development of first-of-kind vehicles and missions

  • Support the development of missions in new business areas
