Job Summary Under the supervision of the Facility Director, the Cytometry Technician will operate the complex cytometry instrumentation provided by the Caltech Flow Cytometry Cell Sorting Facility and assist facility users. The Cytometry Technician will be trained to independently perform cell sorting and analyses for user experiments and guide investigators on interpretation of data generated. They will be responsible for the upkeep of facility instrumentation. Essential Job Duties The Cytometry Technician will be trained to independently operate facility flow cytometers and cell sorters for/with Facility users. They will provide excellent customer service while efficiently scheduling instrument use, assessing the needs of the user’s experiment, and accommodating user experiments including preparation of fluidics, detector and electronic parameters, collection devices, and software templates to meet these needs. The successful candidate will: Work with other lab staff to provide an excellent customer service experience for facility users while they train and provide guidance to investigators on instrument capabilities and compatibilities, experimental set-up, probe panels, experimental and instrument controls, titrations, cell dilutions, region and gate placement, and data interpretation. Work with research groups to optimize future experiments. Contribute to creation of publication quality data for investigators’ publications and presentations. Help to organize and maintain scheduling for instrumentation to accommodate each investigator’s timeline, source material and sterility requirements. Assist in compiling usage tracking and billing. Assist in contributing towards developing SOPs and guidelines, helping researchers with data analysis, and troubleshooting instrument issues. Maintain database of all experimental files, export data to investigators, and perform periodic backups for all experiments for storage and retrieval of data. Responsible for performance and maintenance of instruments, including daily calibration and standardization, troubleshooting, and recordkeeping for tracking instruments and quality control. Oversee field service engineers during preventive maintenance, repairs, instrument updates, and software upgrades. Perform related responsibilities as required by Facility Director. Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field. Proficiency with PCs and common software. Understanding of chemistry and mathematical concepts like reagent dilution, linear/log scaling, and basic statistics. Must have good people skills, communication skills, patience, and adaptability. Preferred Qualifications Experience working within a biological laboratory or core facility. Experience working with live cells, microscopy, sterile cell culture conditions. Familiar with biosafety protocols and laser safety preferred. Internship or manufacturer training in flow cytometric instrumentation.
