Department Summary The Director of Litigation is supervised by the Faculty Director of the Voting Rights Project, but is expected to work independently and with his/her own sovereignty to carry out duties. The Director of Litigation will operate with a high degree of autonomy, independently determines how to carry out assignments and undertake appropriate actions, and is proactive in identifying and bringing to the faculty director’s attention potential problems and opportunities, including offering creative recommendations for action.The Director of Litigation (DOL) initiates, manages and handles, as counsel of record, voting rights litigation developed by the UCLA Voting Rights Project (VRP). The Director, in consultation with the Faculty Director, will hire, train and direct UCLA student fellows regarding trial and appellate cases involving voting rights. Responsibilities include, litigation, trial and appeals in federal and state court. The Director also supervises VRP staff and students handling projects related to the VRP as necessary. The Director will supervise and manage the legal activities of the VRP including research and scholarship. The Director will consult with the Faculty director on course curriculum and student learning objectives related to the voting right policy and the law coursework. The Director will also devote time and attention to fostering partnerships with private legal partners and engage in fundraising and community development. The DOL shall have been licensed to practice law more than fifteen years. The Director will supervise and manage the legal activities of the VRP including research and scholarship. The Director will consult with the Faculty director on course curriculum and student learning objectives related to the voting right policy and the law coursework. The DOL shall have been licensed to practice law more than fifteen years. The DOL shall have taken and passed at least two state bar exams and be licensed to practice law in multiple states. The DOLs must be licensed to practice law in several U.S. Courts of Appeal as well as the United States Supreme Court. The DOL shall have, as first chair, handled numerous jury and non-jury trials in state and federal courts and shall also have handled and argued numerous appeals, in state and federal court, concerning voting and/or civil rights. A substantial part of the DOL’s practice shall include developing, researching, litigating, trying and appealing cases concerning voting and civil rights. The DOL should have substantial experience managing teams of lawyers and support staff. Salary & Compensation *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications Must have tried, to a judge or jury, as first chair, greater than 25 casesto verdict or decision. (Required) Must have served as counsel of record and argued more than 15 appealsbefore United States Courts of Appeal. (Required) 15-20 Years of relevant work experience as a lawyer withincreasing responsibility. (Required) Extensive experience handling, as counsel of record, federal and state litigation concerning election law, redistricting, vote denial and vote dilution. (Required) Experience representing individuals, organizations and governmental units in matters related to voting rights. (Required) Knowledge of voting rights legal and public policy issues. (Required) Experience drafting high quality legal briefs and memoranda. (Required) Experience conducting legal research, providing analysis and drafting language, to support legislation, regulation and policy proposals. (Required) Experience in project management and supervision, including working on research projects or litigation with a large number of volunteers, attorneys, organizations, and/or pro bono attorneys. (Required) Experience recruiting, training, and managing teams of legal professionals in complicated, multi-facet and extended, vigorous litigation. (Required) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations Juris Doctor (JD) Degree Judicial Degree (JD) (Required) And Bachelor’s Degree (Required) Licensed to practice law in several states.
