About the Position:

The Arboretum and Botanical Garden at Cal State Fullerton works to support the academic mission of CSUF with a world class living and historical collection and to provide learning opportunities for every stage of life, extending our resources into the local community and around the globe to foster an appreciation for plant conservation, botanical research and horticulture. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Executive Director, Arboretum and OLLI (Administrator II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

The Executive Director provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and direction for the 26-acre Arboretum and Botanical Garden at Cal State Fullerton (Arboretum) and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), ensuring the continued success and sustainability as a botanical and educational resource for Cal State Fullerton and the surrounding community. This position is responsible for managing staff, overseeing educational and outreach programs, collaborating with the staff and community to grow the Arboretum’s collections, developing and executing fundraising and donor relations strategies, and managing and overseeing the garden’s self-support activities, including facility rentals. The Executive Director fosters partnerships with the university, community, and industry partners to enhance the arboretum’s role in research, education, and public engagement. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in biology, botany, environmental sciences, education, public administration, public garden management, or a related field is required. Eight years of management experience and a proven track record of success in managing a public garden or similar non-profit organization, managing and developing employees, and engaging in donor relations and fundraising. Expertise in project management, financial and budget management, analysis, fundraising, outreach and public relations, written and oral communication, and organizational development is essential. Also, be skilled in building partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
A master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field is preferred. At least three years of experience managing a university-based public garden or a similar non-profit organization, along with experience working in an academic institution.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.

Multiple positions may be hired from this recruitment based on the strength of the applicant pool.
