FY25 – Culinary Arts Instructor LOS ANGELES HARBOR COLLEGE CULINARY ARTS FULL-TIME PROBATIONARY, TENURED-TRACK, FACULTY POSITION (C-Basis: 10 Month Position) DEADLINE TO APPLY: APRIL 1, 2025 SALARY RANGE: $74,500 – $138,430 The Los Angeles Community College District announces a full-time probationary tenured track (C basis, 10 month), Culinary Arts Instructor position at Los Angeles Harbor College (Harbor College). This position will begin in the Fall 2025 semester. Faculty members at Harbor College emphasize student learning by designing comprehensive and rigorous campus and online learning environments for a diverse community of learners. The regular teaching load is 21 hours per week of lecture and/or lab hours. Applicants may be required to teach Saturdays and/or evening assignments on campus or in off-site locations. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree or higher in any field AND Two (2) years of full-time related professional experience OR Associate degree in any field AND Six (6) years of full-time related professional experience. Note : The professional experience required must be directly related to the teaching assignment A sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS Health: A medical certificate indicating fitness to instruct or associate with students is required at the applicant’s expense after selection from an eligible list and prior to employment. Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee’s Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees’ policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Teach 21 student contact hours per week of a 30-hour work week. 2. The instructor should be prepared to teach basic to advanced level courses within the Culinary Arts discipline. 3. Create a classroom environment focused on active learning in which all students are welcomed and encouraged to participate. 4. Demonstrate knowledge of student learning outcomes at the course and program levels and commitment to the institution’s goals and mission. 5. Engage with colleagues in the department and division in regards to division policies and assessment methods. 6. Participate in the process of developing and updating course outlines as well as developing and accessing student and program learning outcomes. 7. Participate in professional development activities to remain current and competent in the academic discipline as contractually required. 8. Serve on campus committees as contractually required and to engage in the shared governance of the college. 9. Serve as a full-time instructor and resource for adjunct faculty teaching the same or similar courses. 10. Maintain an organized, clean, and sanitized learning environment. 11. Plan and execute weekly and catering menu compositions for daily production and special functions. 12. Create catering proposals, execute catering orders and work with head chef to create invoices for catering orders. 13. Demonstrate proper use and care of equipment and tools. 14. Supervise preparation, presentation, and serving of meals to meet industry and course laboratory guidelines. 15. Responsible for correct storage and inventory of all food, additional consumable supplies, utensils, small wares, and equipment in the classroom and food preparation laboratories that are used in the culinary operations. 16. Serve as a role model for students pursuing a career in the Culinary Arts field and maintain an equitable and safe learning environment. 17. Interact with industry advisory committees and other industry professionals. 18. Assist in recruitment activities. 19. Assist the department Chair/ faculty/business office in the preparation of required reports by providing requested information. 20. Attend District Discipline meetings for the purpose of participating in the collegial exchange of information. 21. Maintain accurate records in accordance with the policies, rules regulations and procedures of the Los Angeles Community College District. 22. Maintain office hours to meet the needs of students. 23. Develop and implement lesson plans, curriculum, and student learning outcomes. 24. Develop supplementary materials and incorporate instructional technology to compliment text, other published materials, lecture and laboratory procedures. 25. Perform other contracted duties as assigned by the Department Chair. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS 1. Ability to work in conditions with occasional constant heat, smoke, and/or disagreeable odors. 2. Demonstrate awareness and experience working with historically underrepresented students and non-traditional students. 3. Demonstrate ability to adapt teaching strategies and techniques to different levels of student’s ability and learning styles and adapt teaching strategies and techniques to different cultures and ethnic groups. 4. Currency in the academic field and ability to provide leadership for the program. 5. An understanding of and appreciation for the integration of critical thinking skills and interdisciplinary approaches into the classroom and curriculum are also expected. 6. Demonstrate ability to use innovative and creative teaching techniques and equipment. 7. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff and the community. 8. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English. 9. Ability to communicate the education and early career development ladder and employment options to students. 10. Awareness of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds of community college students, including limited English learners and those with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. 11. Ability to perform duties and responsibilities according to established practices and procedures. 12. Ability to communicate, collaborate, and perform in a team-teaching environment. 13. Ability to instruct and demonstrate basic cooking skills, purchasing, and its efficient production and presentation. 14. Ability to instruct and demonstrate soup and starch cookery, aromatics, and a la carte production for restaurant practices. 15. Experience in teaching as a chef instructor in a culinary program. 16. Experience in high end large volume center of the plate food production. 17. Experience in butchery, poultry, and fish fabrication. 18. Serve Safe Manager’s Certification or equivalent. 19. Certified or Certifiable as a Chef de Cuisine or Sous Chef by the American Culinary Federation. 20. Maintain current knowledge in the discipline and engages in innovative methods of effective in-person and online education. 21. Distance learning certificate desirable. 22. Knowledge needed to facilitate student achievement of skills awards certificates, permits and degrees by guiding and informing students of options and procedures. 23. Experience in strengthening student’s awareness of and connection to college and community resources. 24. Familiarity with the accreditation processes of the district and college. SALARY AND BENEFITS Placement on the salary schedule is determined by academic preparation and employment experience in accordance with the AFT Contract. The salary ranges from $74,500 – $138,430 for the 10-month assignment. Applicants with a doctoral degree are eligible for a doctoral differential of $4,610 per year. District benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.
