FY25 – English as a Second Language, Instructor Los Angeles Harbor College Los Angeles Community College District FY25 – ENGLISH as a SECOND LANGUAGE NON CREDIT INSTRUCTOR FULL TIME, TENURE TRACK C BASIS Effective: Fall Semester 2025 ISSUE DATE: March 27, 2025 DEADLINE DATE TO FILE: May 9, 2025 THE POSITION Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC) is seeking applicants for a tenure-track English as a Second Language Non-Credit Instructor position, 10-month annual contract. The successful candidate must be able to teach all levels of ESL NC from listening, reading, to writing courses. Assignments may include mornings, late afternoons, evenings, and Saturdays. LOS ANGELES HARBOR COLLEGE LAHC officially opened in September 1949. The College has grown from an enrollment of 400 students to a current enrollment of approximately 10,000 students including residents from Wilmington, Carson, Harbor City, Lomita, Gardena, Palos Verdes, San Pedro and Torrance. While still maintaining a technical program, the academic and general education offerings have increased to meet the changing needs of the community. Mission Statement LAHC serves our diverse community by providing access to associate and transfer degrees, certificates, economic and workforce development, and adult and noncredit instruction. We promote equity, diversity, and student success through academic programs and support services that ensure our students become productive members of a global society. ENGLISH as a SECOND LANGUAGE NONCREDIT DEPARTMENT English as a Second Language Non-credit (ESL NC) is part of the Communications Division and supported by the Adult Education office. The college provides ESL NC courses to help students pursue their academic, career, professional, and/or personal goals. We prepare our English as a Second Language learners, disadvantaged populations, and other non-traditional college students to attain the essential knowledge, skills and abilities to assist in their growth opportunities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages; OR, Bachelor’s degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor; OR, Bachelor’s degree with any of the majors specified in subparagraph (2) above; and one year of experience teaching English as a second language in an accredited institution; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor; OR, Possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in English as a second language. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds in a community college. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The candidate will teach courses consistent with the division’s standards and approved curriculum criteria in the current noncredit courses. The candidate will fulfill professional responsibilities that include but are not limited to the following: 1. Update and review Department course outlines; 2. Keep accurate student records 3. Post and maintain office hours; 4. Participate in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes; 5. Participate in the shared governance process; 6. Write and review curriculum; 7. Participate in Division meetings and College activities. 8. The candidate will assume departmental duties as assigned by the chairperson (e.g.,participate in program review, plan and attend advisory committee meetings, assist with student advisement and participate actively on campus committees). 9. The candidate will assume other responsibilities which include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position. 10. The candidate will participate in creating an inclusive, equitable workplace that promotes and values diversity. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS 1. Three to five years of experience teaching different levels and skills of English as a Second language, preferably listening, reading, and academic writing courses at the community college level. 2. Demonstrated experience working with immigrant population and international students. 3. Competence in English sufficient to serve as a suitable linguistic model as well as second language competence. 4. Knowledge of diverse student learning styles, current theories, and methods of teaching English as a Second language courses. 5. Demonstrated knowledge of student learning outcomes at the course level and commitment to the institution’s goals and mission. 6. Currency in the academic field and an ability to provide leadership for the program. 7. An understanding of and appreciation for the integration of critical thinking skills and interdisciplinary approaches into the classroom and curriculum is also expected. 8. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, and staff. 9. Experience using computer technology in an instructional setting. 10. Experience developing curriculum and assessing student learning outcomes. COMPENSATION The starting salary ranges from $74,500 to $138,430 for the 10-month academic year depending on experience and professional preparation. Opportunities for additional earnings exist with winter and summer assignments. The district provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. In addition to the State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS), employees have the option to participate in a 403b. A college selection committee will review all complete applications received. The committee screening will involve an evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications in the areas of training, experience, and personal fitness as determined from the application package. 2. Following the committee screening, selected candidates will be invited for an interview that includes a classroom teaching demonstration and a writing sample. 3. Based upon the hiring committee recommendation, finalists will interview with the president and the vice president of Academic Affairs.
