Job Description

The Genetic Counselor I will provide genetic counseling following established genetic counseling practice guidelines in a variety of settings including cancer genetics clinic, prenatal clinic, pediatric clinic, cardiovascular clinic, neurology clinic, and other settings as appropriate.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Genetic Counselors working under a valid Temporary Genetic Counselor License are permitted to perform the following duties only under direct supervision of a Medical Doctor or fully licensed Genetic Counselor:

  • Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost.
  • Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork.
  • Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and/or supervising physician.
  • May provide case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling.
  • Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support.
  • Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients.
  • Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled.
  • Interacts and communicates regular with the medical geneticist(s) and/or supervising physician(s).
  • Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her/himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary.
  • Provides genetic counseling in accordance w/applicable standards of professional care.
  • Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature. Stays current in GC field.

Qualifications
Requirements:

  • New graduates are welcome to apply. 0-2 years of experience in genetic counseling is acceptable.
  • Master?s Degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program is preferred .

Certification:

  • Must hold a full or temporary Genetic Counseling license in California.
  • ABGC Certification (American Board of Genetic Counseling) required.
  • ABMG Certified Counselors (prior to 1991) may also be considered. Certification is not required if working under a temporary license , in accordance with applicable regulations.

Other Qualifications:

  • A combination of academic education, professional training, or relevant work experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential duties of the position will be considered.
