Under close general supervision of the Landscape Services Manager, provides a variety of intermediate groundskeeping duties to keep the campus attractive and litter-free. Required Education High school education or equivalent. Required Experience One to four years of grounds experience is preferred. Primary Duties/Essential Functions Performs all core duties on a routine basis, under general supervision. Proficient in these additional tasks under general supervision: Provides minor repairs to equipment: walk-behind mower, edger, weed whip, blower, hedge trimmer, chainsaw, transport vehicle, backpack sprayer, hand pruners, loppers, saws, various hand tools, irrigation controllers in designated areas, fertilizer spreader, and ladders Uses and maintains riding mower and tree trimming lift. Maintains existing landscaping and in consultation with supervisor plans for improvement in the area for which the person is responsible. Completes improvements as assigned. Repairs irrigation lines and sprinkler heads. Troubleshoots valves and irrigation wiring. Capable of operating all irrigation controllers on campus. Trims and selectively prunes to direct the growth in line with the plant’s natural habit. Identifies and maintains plants in assigned areas. Has accurate knowledge of plant growth habits including blooming time and appropriate pruning time. Uses selective and non-selective herbicides effectively and keeps records of use. Applies herbicides, mulches, etc. to keep the area weed-free. Feeds turf and applies fertilizers correctly to meet varied plant requirements. Follows general instructions and makes decisions within established procedures. Refers unusual problems to supervisor. Provides team leadership as requested. Supervises teams as assigned. Performs special skilled tasks in a number of areas. Responsible for daily electronic timekeeping as it applies to the scope of this position. Regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Skills Knowledge of materials and tools needed to maintain lawns and shrubs. Basic knowledge of minor mechanical repairs. Basic knowledge of plant nutrient needs and pruning. Mental Demands Able to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to work cooperatively with others. In agreement with the purpose and goals of Azusa Pacific University in providing a Christian-based higher education for its students. Physical Demands Able to do heavy work, i.e., lift 50-75 lbs. Stooping, bending, reaching, climbing, pulling, repetitive motions. Visual Demands Monitor job performance; inspect and operate machinery. Environment Subject to outdoor environment conditions-temperatures above 95 degrees for periods of more than an hour. Subject to noise and vibration. Subject to hazards-proximity to moving mechanical parts, electric current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to chemicals and oils. Required to wear a respirator under some conditions. Technologies Able to use a computer to access email and online training. Compensation Grade 6: $17.72 to $20.38 is the hourly compensation for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package.
