Department Summary Infrastructure Services provides flexible, reliable, and secure traditional and cloud infrastructure services (network services, platform services, data center operations and management, and unified communications) enabling connectivity, productivity, and security for UCLA. Infrastructure services strives to optimize performance increasing storage, elevating the network, and reducing downtown.Network and Engineering Services manages the engineering and operations of the network infrastructure (e.g., wired/WAN, wireless, security/firewall) required to offer network connectivity, such as network cabling, routers, and firewalls. This includes connecting devices (e.g., Internet of Things devices) to the network, network access management, securing access to networks, and appropriate authentication (e.g., network registration systems, VPN, and NAC). Position Summary The Network Engineer, Wireless /Radio will build and maintain the university’s wireless network and radio systems. This role will provide network engineering and technical support for the wireless network infrastructure to ensure systems are operating at peak efficiency with little to no downtime. The Engineer will design, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain university network equipment across multiple platforms. The Wireless Network Engineer will ensure that all networking activities are aligned to industry best practices as well as ITS and university policies, processes, and procedures. The Network Engineer, Wireless/Radio will positively impact UCLA’s operations and culture by ensuring UCLA’s IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university’s academic mission. This team member will advance the University’s mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. This role will execute UCLA’s vision while modeling UCLA’s culture and values. Salary & Compensation *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications Three years experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services, information technology or network operations, or a related field. (Required) Experience in information technology, network engineering, or wireless networks. (Required) Experience troubleshooting wireless networks, including client experience testing, wireless packet analysis, etc. (Required) Experience with 802.11 standards, RF design and implementation, and managing radio systems. (Required) Experience designing controller clustering, failover methods and caveats, group management, AP modes of operation, patching, RF management, etc. (Required) Experience with wireless optimizations, including AP placement, ideal signal levels, optimized roaming, spectrum selection, channel tuning, cell optimization, QoS, etc. (Required) Five or more years experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services, information technology or network operations. (Preferred) Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university (Preferred) Working knowledge of various radio equipment types, including base stations, repeaters, mobile radios, and associated test equipment and understanding of different communication systems. (Required) Knowledge of LAN/WAN and network protocols. Knowledge of monitoring tools and commands to ensure the quick resolution of issues. (Required) Strong written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate technical information and ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders. (Required) Able to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members, stakeholders, and customers. (Required) Strong organizational skills and is able to balance competing priorities and support concurrent projects. Ability to work in a project-based environment using project management practices. (Required) Strong demonstrated problem-solving skills; scopes solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines. Able to ask questions, gather information, evaluate options, and make decisions with integrity. (Required) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations Bachelor’s Degree in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience/training.
