The University of Southern California (USC), one of the nations top research universities, invites applications for tenure-track positions in the Alfred E. Mann Department of Biomedical Engineering in the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. We seek outstanding faculty candidates at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and full Professor ranks. The USC Viterbi School of Engineering is committed to continuing to build a diverse faculty and welcomes applications from individuals with differing social, racial, or ethnic backgrounds; gender; sexual orientation; gender identity and expression; economic circumstances; and physical abilities, as well as veterans. The departments four core thematic areas include the following: Molecular-Cellular Bioengineering: mechanobiology; regenerative engineering; genetic/genomic regulatory networks; synthetic biology; immunoengineering; personalized medicine; drug delivery and gene therapy. Devices/Imaging : diagnostic imaging and therapeutics; functional and multimodality imaging; devices for neuro-modulation; multimodal diagnostics; wearable devices; deep learning for medical image analysis. Mathematical/Computational Biosystems: model-based diagnostics; multi-scale disease modeling; machine learning for precision medicine; data-based dynamic modeling of physiological systems. Neuroengineering : neural interfaces; neuromodulation; optogenetics; neuromorphic computing; multi-neuronal dynamic interactions; motor control and learning; cognitive neuroprosthese. (1) We invite applications from candidates wishing to be considered at the tenure-track Assistant Professor rank who are knowledgeable and have interest in areas at the interface between the above themes. Candidates for this rank with interest in the following high-priority areas are especially encouraged to apply: spatial genomics, immunoengineering, drug delivery and gene therapy, genomic sequencing and analysis of medical applications, and genetic engineering. For this faculty rank, we will focus on candidates promise and/or track record during the review process. (2) We also invite applications from more senior candidates wishing to be considered at the tenured Associate Professor and full Professor ranks who have an outstanding record of accomplishment in the area of computational medicine and health. This search area aligns withUSCs $1 billion Frontiers of Computing initiative , the largest, most comprehensive academic initiative in the universitys history. The initiative has already resulted in the creation of the new USC School of Advanced Computing , which aims to advance computing research and expand USCs presence in Silicon Beach, L.A. Countys tech corridor. Candidates in this search area have the opportunity to be affiliated with our new USC School of Advanced Computing. Applicants are required to incorporate into their research and teaching statements at least one page that clearly describes how their research and teaching interests and accomplishments align with this affinity search area; applications that do not address this in the statements will be considered incomplete and will not move forward in the selection process. We seek enthusiastic individuals who will participate in the universitys research enterprise and engage with students at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Successful candidates will establish a strong, externally funded, research program of national prominence while contributing to the core teaching mission of the department. An earned doctorate in a field related to the Departments core strengths is required. Outstanding senior applicants who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership, and whose past activities document a commitment to issues involving the advancement of women in science and engineering may be also considered for the LloydArmstrong, Jr. Endowed Chair , which is supported by the Women in Science and Engineering Program endowment. To receive full consideration, candidates should apply online at the faculty application website: USC BME Faculty Application . Applications submitted by December 15, 2024, will be given full consideration; applications received after this date may not be considered. Application materials must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research (two pages) and teaching (one page) interests, and contact information for three references. Applicants are also required to include a succinct statement on fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion. Interested individuals who have questions are welcome to contact Dr. Eunji Chung, Biomedical Engineering Search Committee Chair ( eunchung@usc.edu ). They are also encouraged to visit the department website ( http://bme.usc.edu ) for details on current educational and research programs. The USC Viterbi School of Engineering is among the top-tier engineering schools in the world. It counts 213 full-time tenure-track faculty members, and 132 full-time teaching faculty and research faculty. Home to the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) and the Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT), the School has been the recipient of many national centers, including two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers, a Department of Energy EFRC (Energy Frontiers Research Center), and the Department of Homeland Securitys first University Center of Excellence, CREATE. Affiliated with the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience and the USC Stevens Center for Innovation, the School is the host of an NSF I-Corps Hub. Research expenditures typically exceed $177 million annually. In 2017, the School was awarded the ASEE Presidents Award for its continuing efforts to change the conversation about engineering and develop a robust and diverse engineering pipeline. The annual base salary range for the following faculty ranks in this posting are: Assistant Professor: $114,000 – $135,000 Associate Professor $135,000 – $164,000 Full Professor: $173,000 – $236,000 When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope of responsibilities of the position, the candidates work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state.
