Department Summary As members of the Office of the General Counsel of The Regents of the University of California (OGC), the UCLA attorneys who comprise the staff of the Office of Legal Affairs provide legal services to the UCLA campus and UCLA health sciences. Position Summary The Principal Campus Counsel provides advice and counsel on complex legal matters in labor and employment law including matters of access, constitutional rights, immigration, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, disability, accommodation and policy and procedure review. The Principal Campus Counsel works closely with leadership and management across UCLA’s clinical enterprise. That enterprise includes, but is not limited to, multiple hospitals and healthcare clinics providing services and located throughout Southern California. The position is located at UCLA. Salary & Compensation *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications Minimum 8 years employment and/or labor law experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Required) Experience in an academic setting. (Preferred) Substantial knowledge of federal/state labor and employment laws including the Fair Employment and Housing Act, Americans With Disabilities Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, California Family Rights Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act. (Required) Substantial knowledge of federal/state labor and employment laws including the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act or the National Labor Relations Act, as well as privacy, First Amendment, and whistleblower issues. (Required) Experience in employment law as applied in the context of educational institutions, academic personnel, research compliance, accreditation, international agreements, risk management, public/governmental entities, and litigation. (Required) Demonstrated effectiveness in conflict resolution and mediation processes. (Required) Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills. (Required) Demonstrated strategic thinking, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills. (Required) Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with senior leadership and a diverse range of constituents, including faculty, staff, and students. (Required) Workplace style that emphasizes collaboration, teamwork and facilitation. (Required) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations Juris Doctor (JD) Degree from an ABA accredited institution and active membership in good standing of the State Bar of California (or eligible for immediate membership). (Required) Special Conditions for Employment Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
