Department Summary

The Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA was established as an Organized Research Unit (ORU) with the mission to develop and strengthen African American Studies at UCLA. The Center supports research that (1) expands the knowledge of the history, lifestyles, and sociocultural systems of people of African descent and (2) investigates problems that have bearing on the psychological, social, and economic well-being of persons of African descent. Research sponsored and conducted by the Bunche Center is multidisciplinary in scope and spans the humanities, social sciences, fine arts, and several professional schools.
Position Summary

The Black Policy Project (BPP) Program Coordinator will work under the direction of the Faculty Director of BPP. The Program Coordinator will be responsible for managing the various initiatives of BPP and conducting research. The Program Coordinator will be a point of contact for various constituencies that work with the Bunche Center including elected officials, public leaders, faculty and other university officials as well as community members. The Program Coordinator will coordinate meetings between stakeholders, setting and facilitating agendas and discussion when needed, setting timelines, and monitoring progress by team members on various tasks. The Program Coordinator will also work on important BPP research and policy projects. The Program Coordinator will work well in a team environment and have the ability to communicate effectively across a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and exerience (Required)
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills to interact effectively and diplomatically with faculty, university administrators, staff, students, and off-campus (Required)
  • Knowledge of the Bunche Center’s goals and objectives (Required)
  • Oral communications skills to serve as a liaison to convey a variety of information concisely and accurately (Required)
  • Writing skills to present ideas in a logical and concise manner (Required)
  • Ability to think clearly and logically with frequent interruptions and changing priorities (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability in working independently and following tasks through to completion (Required)
  • Skill in defining problems and proposing solutions (Required)
  • Ability to use a PC utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, and other software programs (Required)
  • Knowledge of African American History and Culture (Preferred)
  • A working knowledge of LA County government structure and the history of movements in Black LA communities (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability relevant research findings (Preferred)
  • Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training (Required)
