Job Summary The Caltech Center for Teaching, Learning, & Outreach (CTLO) seeks an educational developer to join our team in the position of Program Manager. Founded in 2012, the CTLO supports Caltech’s vision for educational equity and excellence: continuous improvement and active leadership, education integrated with research, and ongoing contributions to inclusive, equitable, and accessible opportunities for learning. Caltech is a STEM-focused, research-intensive university, with approximately 1,000 undergraduates, 1,200 graduate students, 600 postdoctoral fellows, and 350 faculty and instructors. The CTLO works broadly with Caltech community members who are involved in teaching, whether in the form of Caltech courses or educational outreach. Reporting to the Associate Director for University Teaching, the Program Manager will focus on supporting programs related to teaching and learning at Caltech. The Program Manager’s areas of responsibility will include training teaching assistants and peer academic coaches; planning, facilitating, and assessing programs on teaching and learning designed for graduate students and post-docs, including our annual First-Year TA Training event; managing the administration of the Certificates in Effective Teaching programs; and mentoring student leaders collaborating with the CTLO. The Program Manager will also consult with and coach Caltech students and postdoctoral fellows on a wide range of educational initiatives, ranging from projects that involve K-12 students and teachers, to university-level teaching, to preparing for educational dimensions of future academic careers. The successful candidate for this position will bring a nuanced understanding of the experiences of diverse graduate students (both master’s and doctoral) in STEM fields at research-intensive universities; have experience facilitating educational development activities for university students; be able to carry out assessments of the programs they lead; and be ready to contribute to the enhancement of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility through their work. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential, as the Program Manager will work closely with a wide range of partners across the Institute. This is a three-year term position. This is an Essential Reporting position. An employee designated as essential reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery; and is expected to report to campus as soon as possible. Job Duties In partnership with CTLO staff, design, lead, and assess trainings and orientations for peer academic coaches and teaching assistants (both graduate and undergraduate). In collaboration with the CTLO and graduate student leaders, organize the CTLO’s annual fall TA training day. Provide professional development in inclusive and equitable pedagogy for peer academic coaches, teaching assistants, graduate students, and post-docs. Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate student groups whose missions include programs related to teaching and learning. Manage and update online training materials regarding teaching policies and methods applicable to teaching assistants and peer academic coaches. Cultivate and develop resources (including workshops) for teaching assistants that are evidence-based, accessible, and engaging. Maintain and apply current knowledge of research on student learning, teaching, technology, and educational development relevant to areas of responsibility. Teach effective pedagogical practices to students and post-docs engaged in K-12 educational outreach. Collaborate with other campus offices to coordinate and deliver programs and services. Other duties as assigned. Basic Qualifications A master’s degree in a STEM discipline or a master’s degree in education with strong STEM knowledge/skills. At least two years of experience teaching in higher education (at the college or university level). Prior experience using educational technology at the university level. Ability to design and deliver effective educational development programs and services (e.g., workshops, seminars, trainings, consultations). Knowledge of pedagogical methods and research findings applied to STEM teaching and learning contexts. A deep commitment to building programs that focus on inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility and incorporate evidence-based practice. Ability to communicate and work collaboratively with diverse participants and stakeholders, including faculty, students, staff, and administrators. Strong communication, consultation, presentation, and facilitation skills. Preferred Qualifications Doctoral degree in a STEM and/or STEM education discipline. Demonstrated success in designing and delivering effective educational development programs and services with graduate students. One or more years of prior work in a college or university educational development unit (e.g., center for teaching and learning, center for teaching excellence). Prior experience applying knowledge of pedagogical methods and research findings to STEM teaching and learning contexts. Experience assessing educational development programs.
