Project Scientist Series Pool Ad – Open Ranks in the Department of Surgery University of California Los Angeles Requisition Number: JPF09726 Project Scientist, Open Ranks Pool Ad Department of Surgery The Department of Surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles, anticipates openings throughout the year for appointments in the Project Scientist Series in its various divisions. These openings may be at the level of Assistant, Associate, or Full Rank Project Scientist, depending upon the candidate’s qualifications. This is an ongoing recruitment and positions are dependent upon availability of funding (extramural and/or departmental). Potential Divisions that may have openings include: Cardiac Surgery General Surgery Liver and Pancreas Transplantation Pediatric Surgery Plastic Surgery Surgical Oncology Thoracic Surgery Vascular Surgery Criteria for the Project Scientist Series: The Project Scientist Series make significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project related to Surgery. Project Scientists carry out research or creative programs with supervision by a member of the Professor or Professional Research Series. Project Scientists are expected to have a broad range of knowledge and competency, appointment and advancement depends on technical contributions made to research. Duties: The position will perform independent research under the direction of the Principal Investigator. The appointee will also be responsible for helping to supervise graduate and undergraduate student researchers, preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, and assisting with the preparation of grant proposals. Additional Duties: Ability to work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively. Ability to work independently on scientific projects. Assist with preparation of grant proposals. Preparation of manuscripts for publication in top-tier scientific journals. Required to communicate well with other scientists worldwide. Candidate should have 5 years research experience in an academic setting or equivalent. Experience in small animal surgical procedures, if required. Experience of a specific laboratory procedeure, data processing as required in the study. The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator and will successfully carry out experiments and analyze the data generated with minimal supervision. Equipment maintenance, if needed Required to communicate well with other scientists worldwide. Ability to help and train various personnel in data analysis and make significant contributions to the design and execution of other laboratory members’ experiments. Requirements: This position requires a Ph.D. in a relevant field The Project Scientist position is an academic non-faculty position. Initial appointments are short-term, typically one year, and renewal is based on job performance, programmatic need, and availability offunding. Positions may be full or part-time and may be with/without salary. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
