Job Summary
Design, fabricate, and test a wind tunnel and vacuum chamber to evaluate fiber optic cable interactions with lunar regolith simulant. This role involves developing and assembling specialized testing equipment, utilizing computer-aided design (CAD) software for precision design, and ensuring high-quality fabrication. The Project Technician will support research by maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment, optimizing test conditions, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols to produce accurate and reliable results.
Essential Job Duties
- Design, construct, assemble, test, calibrate, modify, and install specialized equipment and systems, both newly developed and existing.
- Utilize CAD software, blueprints, sketches, and schematics to develop and refine equipment.
- Operate machinery, hand and power tools, and other equipment for fabricating, testing, and modifying instruments, components, and systems.
- Develop time and cost estimates, determine material requirements, and establish methodologies for project execution.
- Order materials and supplies as needed for equipment fabrication and laboratory operations.
- Provide technical support for laboratory experiments, ensuring compliance with protocols and safety regulations.
- Evaluate the performance and reliability of equipment and implement necessary modifications.
- Perform additional functions incidental to research and development technician duties.
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Earth Science, Geoscience, Geophysics, or a related field, with a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience.
- Specialization in designing and constructing physical analog models that replicate natural phenomena.
- Proficiency in CAD and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software.
- Experience in rapid prototyping techniques, such as 3D printing or CNC machining.
- Experience operating basic machining and woodworking equipment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), email, and Google applications.
- Knowledge of materials, supplies, equipment, and laboratory operations.
- Experience with the use, maintenance, calibration, configuration, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Understanding of and adherence to safety procedures.
- Ability to provide technical guidance and training to end users.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate and interpret data.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment while also working independently.
- Familiarity with university organizational policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Skilled in G-code programming and toolpath optimization.
- Ability to manage projects, including scheduling, resource allocation, and team coordination.
