The Marketing Department of Arnold & Porter has an opening for a Proposal Manager. This role can be located in the Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, or Washington, DC office. The Proposal Manager takes the lead role on preferred provider Requests for Proposals (RFP) and similar multi-practice proposals. This position works with lawyers, business development managers, pricing, compliance, and other firm staff to support business development opportunities.
A successful candidate will have a strong work ethic as well as be well-organized, dependable, and dedicated to providing the highest level of service to our attorneys, our clients, and other members of the Marketing Department. The Manager will need to establish her or himself as a trusted advisor to lead attorneys and the business development team.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ownership of the preferred provider Requests for Proposal (RFP) process, and other multi-practice pitch and proposal opportunities from evaluation and planning through submission. Elements of this function include, for example:
- Working with attorneys, marketing staff, pricing personnel and other firm personnel in the evaluation, planning, development, and execution of RFPs, proposals, and presentations.
- Collaborating with practice group Business Development Managers involved in each opportunity, and coordinating with other firm personnel contributing to the proposal processes.
- Acting as project lead for RFPs responses keeping both personnel and information organized.
- Producing proposal documents, including identifying most applicable content, editing existing content, and drafting new content when needed.
- Developing, drafting, and delivering compelling designed to differentiate the firm.
- Coordinating information and research requests with research staff, compliance, HR, IT, and other departments of the firm.
- Proofing, assembly/production and delivery of finished product.
- Acting as a resource to business development personnel in identifying and implementing best practices for each pitch opportunity.
- Tracking and reporting of opportunity outcomes.
- Working with Directors of Business Development and Director of Marketing Operations & Technology to update and improve tools and resources used in connection with responding to pitches and proposals (e.g., Foundation software, templates).
- Ensuring firmwide content used in proposals and pitches is regularly updated and relevant, in coordination with stakeholders including Business Development Managers, firm management, and attorneys.
- Identifying and implementing improvements to our proposals as well as the proposal process.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Prior significant experience in proposal creation and knowledge of (preferred provider) proposal process required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of marketing, proposal, or related experience.
- Minimum of two (2) years of working in a law firm environment.
- Strong client service mindset and ability to establish and maintain effective direct working relationships with partners of the firm.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Capable of handling multiple projects simultaneously and ability to adapt to competing demands.
- Ability to adapt best practices to the unique aspects and staffing associated with specific RFP.
- Proficient in standard firm computer software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
- Comfortable using a variety of proprietary marketing databases such as Foundation or CRM is a plus.
- Familiarity with professional writing styles and strong editing skills.
- Ability to work in an environment with shifting priorities and overlapping deadlines.
- Exhibit superior attention to detail and pride in high quality deliverables.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $120,000 to $170,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
