Description
Research Scientist Caltech Job Category: Fulltime Temporary Exempt Overtime Eligible: Exempt Benefits Eligible: Non-Benefit Based Caltech is a world-renowned science and engineering institute that marshals some of the world’s brightest minds and most innovative tools to address fundamental scientific questions. We thrive on finding and cultivating talented people who are passionate about what they do. Join us and be a part of the diverse Caltech community. Essential Job Duties The position will involve research in collaboration with Prof. Hopkins and members of the research group, in running and analyzing simulations of galaxy formation with different models of cosmic ray transport, utilizing and developing tools for synthetic synchrotron emission and other multi-wavelength emission signatures of those models, developing complementary sub-grid models for future simulations, and analyzing new simulations with different cosmic ray source populations from black holes as well as supernovae. The position will involve interaction with graduate students currently in the group as well as undergraduate former SURF students continuing to work on projects studying cosmic ray simulations. The job will require active involvement in research, attending group meetings and meetings with Prof. Hopkins when possible to discuss research progress and review results, writing up of project results in papers and/or conference proceedings. Some travel is expected for disseminating results at conferences or other forums. Basic Qualifications The candidate must have a Ph.D. in astrophysics, with at least 4-5 years of experience running and analyzing cosmological galaxy-formation cosmic-ray magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Must be able to convert such simulations to synthetic observables and synchrotron spectra and maps. Must have prior experience mentoring undergraduate students in summer projects and working with large theory collaborations and networks like our multi-institution FIRE collaboration. Preferred Qualifications Experience specifically writing research papers and having specific research background in areas including: cosmic ray transport models influence on galaxy formation and the interstellar medium, on synchrotron spectra and emission profiles, on diagnostics of magnetic field properties in galaxies, on the far infrared-radio correlation, and on different models for cosmic ray transport in an interstellar and circumgalactic medium context.
