What We’re Looking For
Do you believe streets should be more than asphalt and striping-places that move people, spark joy, and strengthen communities? At Michael Baker International, we’re redefining mobility across Southern California, and we’re searching for a visionary Active Transportation Planning Lead to help drive that transformation.
You’ll partner with an inspired team of planners and engineers to reimagine how people move-designing environments where walking, biking, and transit aren’t just possible, but preferred. In this role, you’ll guide project delivery, cultivate emerging talent, and shape new opportunities that push active transportation forward across the region.

Innovation fuels everything here. You’ll work alongside people who see community impact as a mission, not a tagline. Expect competitive compensation, flexible work options, and the chance to leave a lasting imprint on Southern California-one bold corridor at a time.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead, motivate, and mentor a multidisciplinary team focused on designing vibrant, people-first mobility corridors.
  • Take ownership of the full project lifecycle-planning, design, and delivery-for initiatives ranging from pedestrian and bicycle networks to Safe Routes to School and multimodal transit integration.
Serve as the trusted expert and forward-thinking project manager on complex, high-visibility transportation challenges.
  • Develop clear scopes, reliable budgets, and achievable schedules; build client confidence through exceptional communication and execution.
  • Drive business development efforts-present innovative concepts, write compelling proposals, and cultivate lasting client relationships.
  • Collaborate across teams, agencies, and communities to expand what’s possible in active and multimodal transportation.
  • Mentor and elevate junior staff, fostering a culture that celebrates creativity, inclusion, and innovation.

What You Need to Succeed

  • 10-15 years of professional experience.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred but not required.
  • At least 10 years in roadway and highway design, with strong command of construction documents.
  • 5+ years managing projects or leading design teams, with a track record of growing impact.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation, plus Civil 3D or OpenRoads.
  • Strong understanding of utility coordination, right-of-way processes, and streetscape design.
Genuine passion for active transportation and multimodal systems.
  • Expertise in geometric design, accessible public spaces, grading, drainage, and transformative corridor elements.
  • Experience crafting successful grant applications to turn visionary ideas into funded projects.
Background working with disadvantaged communities or advancing Vision Zero initiatives.
