As the Supplier Development Engineer, you are responsible for supporting supplier development activities to support the North America PPG Aerospace Strategic Business Unit. The business unit has six manufacturing sites, Science & Technology group, and seven distribution centers which procure direct and indirect products and services in support of manufacturing and distributing our products/services. The position will onsite be based out of Sylmar, CA. You will support the Supplier Development Project Managers and report to the Supplier Development Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and execution of short-to-long term procurement projects of the Aerospace SBU. These projects may involve alternate materials, 2nd source suppliers, engineering/tooling development, supplier/PPG site qualification, work transfers, new production introduction/development (NPI/NPD), cost reduction efforts (cost avoidance/cost savings), new work bid, supply base consolidation, identifying new dock-to-stock suppliers, return-to-green plans, and enhancing supplier delivery performance and yields.

  • Support the qualification and selection of suppliers, leading to customers’ acceptance.

  • Manage communication between internal and external stakeholders and interface between suppliers, leadership, procurement, supply chain, design engineering, operations, and quality teams.

  • Reduce supply risk by identifying & developing key second source suppliers and alternate materials.

  • Lead and/or participate in supplier qualification & development activities such as value stream analysis, capacity/ capability assessments, production rate readiness assessments (PRR/ PRA), PPAP/ APQP, first article (FAI) submission, Kaizen events, continuous improvement projects/ workshops, etc.

  • Support effective closure of open action items within the Supplier RAIL (Rolling Action Item Log).

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with procurement, supply chain, quality, operations, and design engineering teams with the common goal of reducing costs while improving the overall quality of sourced goods and services.

  • Work together with quality, manufacturing, or design engineers to improve material reliability/ performance and to minimize recurrence of incoming nonconforming material (increase yields at the supplier).

Qualifications

  • Only U.S. Citizens, Green Card holders, and political asylees or refugees are eligible to apply.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science, or related professional degree.

  • 3+ years of related Procurement, Supplier Development, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering experience.

  • Six Sigma, Continuous Improvement, or Lean Manufacturing experience (ASQ, ASCM/ APICS, ISM and/ or other industry recognized certifications/ training are desirable).

  • Must work well in a team environment, balance projects, and make effective presentations.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally to suppliers and other PPG sites (up to 25% of the time).

The base salary range for this position is $80,000 to $120,000 + annual bonus plan.
