Department Summary Under the administrative purview of the Rolfe/Campbell Humanities Group, which also oversees the Spanish & Portuguese Department, the Linguistics Department focuses on the scientific study of language in all aspects and houses three laboratories in phonetics, language processing, and language acquisition. The Linguistics Department consists of faculty, postdoctoral scholars, visiting researchers, language consultants, graduate/undergraduate students, and administrative and academic staff, and offers a robust program toward graduate degrees, undergraduate degrees, and language learning in American Sign Language and Swahili. Qualifications Independent and critical thinking organizational and detail-oriented skills to maintain accurate student and scheduling records and files, upholding rules of confidentiality. (Required) Skill in basic algebra to compute units, GPA data, and weighted averages to determine degree deficiencies, process degree clearances, and compile basic statistical reports. (Required) Superior skill in using a variety of interpersonal communications skills to interact appropriately, supportively, sensitively, and diplomatically with a diverse group of individuals to solve academic and administrative issues. Strong writing skills in business correspondence in an educational setting. (Required) Ability to analyze a problem, define its possible causes, and suggest courses of action to assist students, faculty, and staff in solving individual or mutual concerns. Ability to present a wide variety of statistical data in a clear and effective manner for use by faculty and administrators. (Required) Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision. Skill in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner under conditions of fluctuating workload, competing projects, and demanding deadlines. (Required) Skill in developing procedures to quickly and accurately assess individual student progress while assisting a large number of undergraduate students enrolled in department classes. (Required) Skill in coordinating people and activities in the counseling office daily with frequent interruptions and/or distractions. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with diverse personalities. (Required) Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint. (Required) Skills in interpretation of transcripts and/or coursework from other universities/colleges to accurately advise students on degree applicability. (Preferred) Working knowledge of University support services, central offices, departmental procedures, and federal/state laws regarding confidentiality of student records. Working knowledge of undergraduate degree programs and requirements within the College as well as university/college/departmental forms. Experience with university advising and scheduling systems, such as OASIS, DARS, CIMS, etc. (Preferred) Demonstrated skill in employing fundamental advising techniques with sensitivity sufficient to assist students in the resolution of problems or establishment of academic goals. (Required) Ability to make oral group presentations to provide information on academic programs and explain degree requirements, procedures, and policies.
