Description
The Animal Health Technician II will provide a wide variety
of paraveterinary health care duties that are directly related to all animal
research conducted at UCLA. Major duties include, but are not limited to campus
animal health programs, investigator services & procedures training,
clinical and laboratory management, and animal conditioning & quarantine.
Salary Range: $31.76 – $39.72 Hour
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s
in science or RVT + 3 years of experience in laboratory animals. Or, High
school diploma + ALAT AALAS Certification + 5 years of experience in laboratory
animals. - Ability
to recognize abnormalities in behavior of laboratory animals (dogs, rabbits,
rats, mice, pigs, sheep, and others) and signs that indicate disease. - Ability
to effectively communicate with faculty and staff who have varying degrees of
veterinary medical training. - Ability
to lift up to 50 pounds. - Skill
in administering oral (including gavage) and parenteral (ID, SQ, IM, IP, IV)
medications including fluids to different species. - Skill
in handling and restraining laboratory animals. - Skills
in the operational aspect of an inhalation gas anesthesia machines. - Skill
in the collection of animal diagnostic samples from animals including but not
limited to blood, urine, feces. - Knowledge
of basic anesthesia administration, monitoring and recovery principles - Skill
in operating and maintaining basic surgery room equipment including preparing
and sterilizing surgical instruments. - Ability
to complete tasks in an independent, orderly and timely fashion. - Skill
in writing health reports and other records with legible handwriting, or using
computer systems - Skill
handling and monitoring animals pre-intra and post-operatively . - Skill
in cleaning and disinfecting laboratory, surgery and necropsy rooms. - Ability
to euthanize animals using CO2 chambers and by IV injection of euthanasia
solution or an over dose of anesthetic agents.
Knowledge of and skill in performing the injection including the use of
controlled substances and ability to ascertain that death has occurred. Knowledge of appropriate disposal of the
animals, including bio-hazardous animals.Ability to euthanize animals using CO2

animals. - Familiar
with local, state, and federal regulations governing Animal Research: The
Animal Welfare Act (9 CFR, Sub.Ch A), Good Laboratory Practice for Nonclinical
Laboratory Studies ( 21 CFR Part 58), The Guide 8th Ed., and Public
Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals - Ability
to follow safety procedures. - Knowledge
of and the ability to apply the concept of contamination control practices
including engineering, administrative, and procedural controls for the
containment of pathogens, including disinfection, and waste handling
methods appropriate for work in bio-containment animal facilities up to BSL2
level with BSL3 practices. - Knowledge
of and ability to accurately follow SOPs, working instructions and other
written and verbal training materials.
Preferred:
- Knowledge
of the requirements for sample storage and processing - Assist
in training of fellow employees and lab members for IACUC or DLAM required
training. Report completion of training to MSO and document appropriately. - Ability
to assist in class preparation and delivery. - Skill
in teaching biomedical procedures
