What you will be doing
The Assistant Store Director (ASD) is a key store leader responsible for driving strong store conditions, sales performance, and team effectiveness through disciplined operational execution, a consistent customer experience, and effective associate leadership across the store. Reporting directly to the Store Director, the ASD partners closely to deliver operational excellence, financial discipline, food safety and safety standards, consistent execution, and people-first leadership.
The Assistant Store Director assumes overall store responsibility in the absence of the Store Director, ensuring continuity of operations, customer service, team leadership, and decision-making.
This posting is for Assistant Store Director opportunities with Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions across multiple Southern California locations, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Kern Counties.
Main Responsibilities
Operational Excellence
- Drive strong store conditions and sales results by supporting financial performance for the Grocery Department and total store, including sales, margin, labor, shrink, and controllable expenses; review P&L results and support budgeted goals.
- Align labor coverage to current and projected sales to ensure proper staffing, control overtime, and meet reporting requirements.
- Ensure consistent execution of merchandising programs, schematics, signing, promotions, inventory levels, and vendor displays.
- Ensure safe, clean, and well-maintained store conditions through consistent execution of food safety, sanitation, and safety standards.
- Oversee stock receipt and inventory controls to reduce out-of-stocks and shrink while maintaining operational efficiency.
- Maintain a visible presence throughout the store and provide hands-on operational support as needed to ensure strong store conditions, customer service, and execution standards.
Customer Experience
- Champion a customer-first culture through friendly, prompt, and helpful service.
- Maintain strong sales-floor presence to support associates, monitor conditions, and engage customers.
- Resolve customer relations issues using sound judgment and leadership.
- Reinforce Greet, Offer, and Thank (GOT) behaviors to ensure consistent service execution.
People & Culture Leadership
- Lead, coach, develop, and supervise store associates, building talent and bench strength across the store.
- Support end-to-end hiring activities, including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding.
- Partner with the Store Director, HR, and Labor Relations on staffing, performance management, and associate relations.
- Foster an inclusive culture and positive community involvement aligned with company values.
Thought & Results Leadership
- Analyze sales, labor, shrink, and operational trends to identify improvement opportunities.
- Own assigned priorities and action plans, ensuring follow-through and results.
- Apply financial and operational insights from store metrics and reporting to daily decisions.
- Exercise sound judgment in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
Compliance & Standards
- Ensure compliance with company policies and government regulations, including safety, food safety, sanitation, and wage and hour laws.
- Maintain pricing integrity through partnership with the Scanning Department and adherence to signing standards.
- Ensure administrative processes and required reporting are completed accurately and on time.

- Proven ability to exercise sound judgment in dynamic, high-impact situations.
- Strong communication discipline when making decisions, ensuring alignment with leaders and cross-functional partners.
- Comfortable using common business technology and systems, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word), to review reports, communicate effectively, and support store operations.
Basic Qualifications
- 3-5 years of progressive retail leadership experience required, including at least one year in a salaried/exempt retail leadership role.
- Operational leadership experience in grocery or big-box retail strongly preferred; candidates from other high-volume retail environments may be considered based on scope and leadership experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience using operational and financial reporting to support decision making, labor planning, inventory management, and sales performance.
- Food Safety and Sanitation certification (or ability to obtain).
- Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and peak business periods.
