BRIDGE PRACTICE

Exemplifying its depth and versatility in the bridge space, Michael Baker International, ranked Number Four by Engineering News-Record in its annual ranking of Bridge Design Firms in the United States, has partnered with clients on a full spectrum of bridge types-from conventional grade separations to major, complex river crossings, including trusses, arches, box girders and cable-stayed bridges.

DESCRIPTION

Working closely with our California leadership, Transportation Practice Executive, Regional Bridge and Transportation Practice Leads, and local transportation professionals, this individual will support the development and implementation of an innovative business strategy, identifying and leading key strategic pursuits, managing large bridge contracts, and establishing strategic relationships with clients and teaming partners to support and grow Michael Baker’s bridge practice in California.

The California Bridge Lead may also support the bridge practice nationally to develop innovative and value-added solutions to various bridge design and asset management challenges. The position will require excellent technical and communication skills and the ability to interface with Michael Baker International staff and clients to ensure growth of business and execution of work with the highest technical excellence. In this role they will pursue, lead, manage, and perform bridge engineering services on a variety of high visibility projects.

The position will maintain a professional profile and reputation within the industry at local, regional and/or national levels.The California Bridge Lead will work closely with, and report to, the California Transportation Practice Executive to prioritize individual responsibilities within this framework and promote collaborative excellence in all of Michael Baker’s bridge services.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Provide regional and national leadership in the growth, capture, and delivery of professional services contracts; and drive growth to expand Michael Baker’s Bridge and Transportation presence in California.
  • Develop and maintain client, stakeholder and teaming partner relationships. Work closely with the Michael Baker California and Regional Transportation Leadership Team in pursuit identification and strategies, agency and public outreach, and allocation/management of technical resources. Identifies and leverages partnership opportunities, build knowledge in government relations, protocol and processes and develop strategic relationships with key elected officials, industry leaders, agency management leaders and colleague firms through collaboration with Business Development Associates.
  • Lead project delivery as Program Manager, Project Manager, Technical Manager, Technical Lead, or Technical Advisor for local and/or regional projects through provision of technical direction and oversight to the design team; oversights fiscal management relative to scope, schedule and budget; promotes adherence to client management, implementation of quality control processes and appropriate level of delegation to, and oversight of, key supporting staff.
  • Actively participate in local and regional professional organizations working to secure leadership roles on Board(s) or Committee(s)
  • Maintain awareness of relevant technical developments and seek opportunities to develop a professional profile and thought leadership through presentations at relevant conferences/meetings; actively participate in technical committees for industry organizations in bridge design or asset management.
  • This is a highly visible position that requires strong interpersonal, communication, presentation and negotiation skills, as well as problem-solving abilities.
  • Connect /cross-market other discipline services and solutions. Support other disciplines that have existing client relationships and leverages those relationships for growth opportunities. Assist in design-build pursuits including strategic pursuit planning, stakeholder outreach, proposal development and project management execution for project delivery as may be warranted.
  • Lead proposal, interview, fee development and negotiations for various project pursuits.
  • Provide technical and management expertise and guidance to staff, including Bridge Department Managers; provide technical reassurance to Michael Baker clients and stakeholders.
  • Provide technical advisory services to clients within the area of subject matter expertise.
  • Assist in the development of firm-wide talent through coaching, mentoring and recruiting.
  • Collaborate with Transportation Leadership team regarding staff assignments, workshare, mentorship, business pursuits and quality of project deliverables.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Engineering Management, or similar degree
  • California P.E. is required, California S.E. preferred
  • 20+ years of related design-build and/or design-bid build experience with increasing levels of responsibility
  • Strong track record of overseeing successful project delivery of transportation projects for SBCTA, RCTC, RCTD, OCTA, LA Metro, Caltrans and local cities / counties
  • Familiarity with Caltrans standards and procedures
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and the drive to be a leader in the company to grow our transportation bridge practice in the California marketplace
  • Ability to lead and interact with multi-disciplined teams
  • Possess excellent client skills and ability to enhance and develop solid client relationships. A background in business development, proposal writing, networking and strong listener of client’s needs

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this position is $220,000 – 275,000. This will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the incoming candidate.
