Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems Sector, Payload & Ground Systems in Azusa CA, is in need of an optical (Principal level 3, or Sr Principal level 4) engineer with experience in lens design and analysis. This role will report on-site daily. We can accommodate partial telework, but this is dependent upon business/program need.

The skills and specifications of optical engineer for the role of lens designs and analysis are:

Experience in designing visible through infrared telescopes, calibration optics, camera lenses, athermal optical systems is desired. Experience in working with mechanical CAD software will also be advantageous. The ability to interact with potential customers and form a set of firm specifications from customer’s desires and then design to those specifications is important. Equally important is the desire and ability to learn the necessary skills.

Basic Qualifications (Principal Level 3)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field & 5 years of related optical engineering experience, OR a Master’s Degree in a STEM field & 3 years of related optical engineering experience
  • Fundamental understanding of optical architectures from specifications and first principles (i.e. reflective, refractive, pupils, stops, or relays)
  • Perform an end-to-end optical lens design, analysis, tolerancing, and simulation using Zemax OpticStudio, Code V, FRED, Matlab, and ray-trace modeling tools
  • Direct experience in the specification and testing of optical systems including working knowledge of optical test and evaluation equipment, and understanding of precision alignment & metrology techniques
  • Understanding of contributors to radiometric performance in EO/IR payloads
  • Systems Engineering life cycle experience such as requirements as such requirements development, design, integration, and test
  • Ability to obtain & maintain a DoD secret security clearance (US Citizenship Required)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Designing, setting up, and conducting optical system lifetime tests
  • Ability to layout mechanical arrangements for optical testing, possibly in CAD
  • Experience in the specification or design of motion control systems, such as fast-focus modules
  • General knowledge of operations, including procurement, planning, manufacturing, test engineering, and quality systems
  • Writing technical reports in both detailed written format and concise pictorial oral presentation format
  • Execution of assigned tasks in a time and cost-efficient manner
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to train junior or entry level engineers
  • Current & active DoD security clearance

Salary Range: $111,600 USD – $167,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $138,300 USD – $207,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
